And may I add that "Ladies Choice" is one of the BEST songs to ever appear in a musical. I have been addicted to this song since the day it appeared on iTunes.
My Review (Really Long!)
-----------
1. Good Morning Baltimore: I love Nikki's version. It is so full of life and energy down to the last note as she arrives at Patterson Park High. She seems so hyped up and as I hear it, I can see how it will work onscreen.
2. The Nicest Kids in Town: James version is a whole lot better than Clarke's. The new Council Members really add more energy to the song. I do miss the screaming of the councilettes though. Love the echoing of Link's name during 'Roll Call'. One of my favorite songs from the whole movie.
3. It Takes Two: Zac really sounds like he really has the right voice to play Link. I totally smiled when he mentioned Frankie and his 'mouseketeer'. One thing I missed was Tracy joining in at the end. I know that this will go well onscreen.
4. Miss Baltimore Crabs: My new favorite song! I keep playing it over and over. I can see in my mind the young Velma in the MBC pageant during the orchestrations in the middle of the number. I also love the additions for Amber's character. Michelle Pfeiffer does a great long and high note at the end.
5. I Can Hear the Bells: I wish Penny's vocals at the beginnning were still included. Anyway, I keep seeing it as it is played onstage. I don't see it as Tracy in the car with Link or her in band, etc. Great orchestrations!
6. Ladies' Choice: As I have said alot before, this IS the new "Madison". It still has the dirty parts though like "The Madison". I love the background vocals and Zac makes it very cool. Atleast it doens't sound like Disney! lol
7. The New Girl in Town: I absolutely love this song. Though kinda short, it is really good! I love Tammy & Shelley's vocals but at some points I ca't tell who's who. I love the 'Ladies, step aside!' from the Dynamites. I was so surprised that this was the song from the clip from "Oprah". Glad it is included!
8. Welcome to the 60's: Looooove this version. John is better than Harvey in this one. (No offense). I also lke the Dynamites' voice. It reminds me of Mary Bond Davis' Motormouth. I love the, "54 Double D?" "Triple E!" lol. The additional lyrics at the end are great! Good job, Marc!
9. Run and Tell That!: Love the beginning orchestrations. For a second, I though that it was GMB. lol. This kid can SING! I also love fellow Texan, Taylor Parks' solos! She is the new Inez!
10. Big, Blonde & Beautiful: Queen Latifah really brings down the house in this number! The background vocals and orchestrations are amazing! So much talent in one song. Though not as long as the original version, it still brings the same attitiude and "funk" that Mary Bond brought. I love the "Who needs a twig when you can climb the whole tree?" line. That really made my day because I am the "kinda big" one in my family and now I tell my mom that ever since! lol.
11. Big, Blonde & Beautiful (Reprise): Another one of my favorite songs, John and Michelle really give a show with this one. I love the song and I love the scene that goes with it. After seeing the clip for the first time I was kinda slow and didn't understand it. Now that I re-watch the clip and hear the song, I now know the place in the movie makes sense. This song brings the love into "(You're) Timeless to Me." Velma is so good at being bad!
12. (You're) Timeless to Me: Great rendition. Christopher blew me away! I never knew he could sing. I also love the "salsa" orchestration in between the verses. I also like how John makes himself seem like he's... or shall I say she's... Edna is lightening up with what happened during "BBB (Reprise)". It makes Edna seem so soft.
13. I Know Where I've Been: Latifah really shows her serious side with this version of the song. I was a little worried before if she'd do a great job. Latifah brought me to tears as I heard this song. It is very well brought out. It is a great choice to have as the march song.
14. Without Love: As the first song I heard, it is really the best "WL" that I've ever heard since the original Broadway cast! Zac and Nikki blew me away, though I miss Nikki's verses. Anyway, as the first song Amanda sings, she really brings the song the attitude Penny then reaches. Elijah and Amanda really have good chemistry. Though from what I've seen she seems a little scared to be near Seaweed on film.
15. (It's) Hairspray!: Now THIS is how the real song should sound! James does a good job with his vocals. He seemed a little of at some points though. IMO. This is really good!
16. You Can't Stop the Beat: OMG! As soon as I heard it, I literally jumped out of my seat and started doing the moves from the Broadway show. This is the showstopper right here! John and Latifah do amazing verses and I love the music after Edna's verse and I can see John doing the dances that Edna has "learned" after seeing Tracy do them. (According to the novel). I am amazed that the entire cast did such a great and amazing job! Velma and Amber should have had their solos! But after reading the novel, I knew why they were cut. I don't want to spoil it. My #1 fave song!
17. Come So Far: A great song! Marc, you did a great job! I think that this will be the graduation song for all of the high schools in the US! I know I will brig it up to my principal!
Love the "Welcome to the 60's" done by Latifah during the song. I am amazed by Zac's singing in this song.
18. Cooties: Love it, love it, love it!! There are no words to describe how this song is so awesome!
19. Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now: I love the surprise at the end! So cool to have that in there. I love Rikki's verses! I had no idea she could sing! She is as talented as Marissa and Nikki are in this song.
Marc, you have done a kick ass job with this soundtrack! I am totally getting it! Especially as B-Day and Christmas presents for my friends and family!! This will be #1 on the charts no doubt about it!

I can't agree with the praising of the cast... I just don't like the singing in this film, minus Nikki, Elijah, and a few others. That and to me the songs are lacking the energy in the OBC. It's hard to describe...

They are lacking that "energy" in the film because the performers don't have to over-emphasize everything just to reach to the back of the theater. I'm sure once you see the film with the visuals and music together, it will all make better sense.
Beyond dreadful. Train wreck ahead...
I also agree that this recording is a tad better in some ways than the Original Broadway Cast Recording.
Aimee Allen sounds just like Michelle Pfeiffer. If you listen to that "Cooties" track and think Michelle Pfeiffer, you'll all agree.

Lenexa, I have to disagree. I listened to the entire thing tonight and think it sounds great. I'm a bit disappointed that Amanda Bynes doesn't belt it out as well as I'd like, but the beefed up orchestrations make up for it (kudos, Marc!). I was prepared to dislike Travolta, but found his vocals to be oddly charming (and much more understandable than Fierstein's).
Well, Marc, it took all the way until page three for cretins to start ****ting on your wonderful, wonderful work.
You must be getting better and better....
Great, great movie score. Hope you get the paperweight.
allofmylife, that was very rude and uncalled for. If someone doesn't like what they're hearing, they have every right to say so. It's called an opinion.
Well, just finished listening to it. My overall reaction had to be "eh".
Nikki and Elijah were phenomenal and the two best performers on the album. Loved it every time they sang.
I enjoyed the new orchestrations, though I felt "Baltimore Crabs" was a bit slow.
The majority of the performers were just fine, for me.They weren't bad, but they didn't make me go "Wow! This is really great!". And, as mentioned, with most of the performances, I felt energy was lacking.
I really wasn't fond of Travolta or Marsden. I didn't really enjoy Marsden's takes on his songs too much. As for Travolta, well, he just seems so unenthusiastic. It's like there's no energy there, just walking through the motions of the songs. I didn't feel any joy or energy coming through in his songs at all.
Overall, it was good, but I still think the Original Cast Album is better. Regardless, I'll still be seeing the movie on Opening Day.

Haven't finished it, but it sounds great. So much easier to listen to than the OBC.
Nikki Blonsky is the next Jennifer Hudson in terms of Movie-musicals.

Love it! Love it! Love it!
Nikki is FABULOUS and I only hope and pray she gets all of the credit and spotlight she deserves for her performance! (She outperformed all of the big names and deserves to be recognized for it!)
I TOTALLY see the next Jennifer Hudson in her. I mean... EVERYTHING. Big girl, big voice, big energy, big performance, going big places!
What are the chances of her scoring some of the awards JHud did?

I'm liking most of it! I can't wait to see what it's like on film.
I REALLY liked The New Girl In Town. I'm only through Big Blonde and Beautiful now though. Kudos to Marc!
Oh, and Nikki--I might go straight for her.

Can I just state for the record what a phenominal voice Queen Latifah has? I wish she would do more singing with her career. Wonder if this will garner any awards come award season for her.
Wonderfulwizard11, if you bothered to read the whole thread, you'd see that I was just replying to a question pondered by Mr. Shaiman earlier in the thread.
His exact comment was:
"what a lovely thread...how long do ya think before someone sh**s all over it??"
I think that some of the folks on this site are twelve-year-olds. Or behave like twelve-year-olds. And that's a shame.
hey, let's get back to the lovlieness!!!

allofmylife: Calling people cretins just for disagreeing with your opinion isn't exactly the most mature thing, either.
Marc is right. Back to the loveliness.
But..... right after I point out that criticizing the work of a Broadway genius seems cretinous to me.
Sorry Marc.
Butterflies and Unicorns. Butterflies and Unicorns....
By the way, how cool is it that the creator actually visits a fan site? In ANY of the arts, this is pretty cool. We are lucky people.
And I must admit, I fall off my chair every time I see "Shipoopi, Bitches" at the bottom of spiderJ82s messages.
Love it.
The orchestrations (esp. "Can't Stop the Beat" and "Welcome to the 60s") are a dream. This is what the score was meant to sound like.
The cast rocks, but I'm not crazy about Bynes (whose performance, I hope, will make more sense on screen). Latifah owns her numbers, as does Pfeiffer.
Blonsky is a delight, and I'm convinced that no young girl could have done it better. Efron is impressive (even if the ProTools is obvious in certain spots), and Kelley is wonderfully energetic.
And... Marsden is a musical theatre force. Who knew?
I have to say I really, really appreciate what Travolta is doing with Edna. I'm really getting all sides of the woman: her apprehensiveness about stepping out, her attitude, her motherly affection, and her eventual pride about who she is. Kudos to Travolta for making such interesting choices.
Also, the new songs are terrific, and fit right in with the source material. "Come So Far" is nomination-worthy.

Oy, the soundtrack with that bonus DVD via Circuit City and Wal-Mart made me look into it further.
Buy the soundtrack at Wal-Mart as it's bonus DVD is only available with the soundtrack.
The bonus DVD on the Circuit City offer is available with ANY purchase of a CD or DVD -- you don't have to buy the HAIRSPRAY Film Soundtrack to get it. Just buy another DVD or CD and take the HAIRPSRAY bonus DVD.
Phew! Hope no one else comes-up with another bonus DVD exclusive.
Thank ya, allofmylife.
Amanda is fine . . . the only thing that bugs me when she sings is that scoop up at the end of every phrase. But, that is such a minor thing. It's just this "breeder" being picky.
"Tomorrow, tomorrow. Hairspray (the soundtrack) comes out tomorrow. It's only a daaaaaaaaaaaay aaaaaaaaaaaaawaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay."
