I'm surprised After Eight hasn't burst a blood vessel or two yet.

Sad to hear the news, but given its subject matter it's remarkable that it's had such a successful run. It's a gorgeous show, and I plan to return one more time before September 10th.

One of my favorite shows of the past decade. And perhaps my favorite musical design/direction ever. Brilliant.
That said, I can understand it not running 5+ years. It's a heavy night out. Not a show you want to see again and again.

Whenever I read one of After Eight's comments, I recall what Mrs. Lovett screams when Judge Turpin clutches her skirt in the bakehouse.
Does anyone know or can anyone guess why After Eight keeps going to the theatre? He/She/It hates everything. Is hate keeping keeping After Eight alive?

This is without a doubt a show you would want to see more than once or twice

"Again and again" is different than "more than once or twice." I love this show so much, but I've only seen it four times. I had to space it out (and I waited to see various cast members). Four times for a show I love this much that's as accessible as it is, is NOT a lot for me.

hmmm i wonder if this means the rumor of the Gillian Anderson streetcar coming to broadway ends up being true....

I hope not. I don't want that distracting production or her self-indulgent Blanche on Broadway.

I still have not seen it. Just had to cancel my vacation next month so I think I will have to get in and see it when I planned to be away.

Do report back on the boards, uncageg! I often enjoy reading your thoughts and, given the profile pic, you'll get something out of Jeanine Tesori's music.

Yeah unfortunately its not up to you and the lead producer and the young vic would considering almost the whole St Anns run was sold out

With Sally on that one. Paid a rare full price ticket and felt like I was watching a pretentious undergrad directing lab. It would at least have camp value on Broadway, which is far from nothing.

They should do it for HBO and incorporate the artist's drawings in a creative way.

After Eight said: ""It has nothing to do with the quality of the show,"
Yep. Just the line we were expected to be fed--- and will be --- for all eternity. That sure didn't take long, did it?
To the contrary, it has EVERYTHING to do with the quality of the show. Or more appropriately, to the lack thereof.
It lasted a lot longer than Dear World. Guess that makes it better.

"By that logic, the better the quality the longer it runs."
Uh, except that's not the logic at all.
This item was not bad because it was rejected by the public; it was rejected by the public because it was bad.
Try to grasp the difference, if you can.

After Eight how old are you? I get the feeling the musicals you enjoy are the incredibly dated flouncy tits and teeth shows.

It's not unreasonable to argue that this was quite a weak result, in terms of customer response, for 'best musical'. If it had been in a more typically sized theatre, it would surely have closed months ago.

Well yes, I don't think that's a controversial point to make though. The statistics are the statistics (I didn't realise/forgot that Sweeney Todd had an even shorter run! - though I suppose it was a much bigger theatre).
What's more controversial/interesting is the conclusion people want to draw from that. For example, After Eight's conclusion is that it reflects poorly on the quality of the show.
My conclusion would probably be that it simply reflects the difficulty of the show to reach a wide audience because of its subject matter.

I saw the show last October and absolutely loved it. Seamlessly directed and staged, a uniformly excellent cast, a score that touched my heart, and a story that both haunted and uplifted me.
I couldn't have asked for more from a night at the theatre. It will live on in my memory.
Oh, and ...

"My conclusion would probably be that it simply reflects the difficulty of the show to reach a wide audience because of its subject matter."
La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy, The Boys in the Band managed to reach wide audiences. They were simply good.
I'm afraid this thread has evolved just as I knew it would. The tireless wagon circlers immediately rush in to set in stone the accepted elitist narrative. The fact is, if people here are going to dismiss out of hand the notions that a) people may not have liked the show, b) people may not have liked the show because it was bad, and c) people may have thought it was bad because it WAS bad, then there is no discussion possible, much less concern for the truth. But then, truth is often the last concern of the powers-that-be and their loyal followers.

That's up to you of course that you might not want to see it more than once....but I personally HAVE seen it again and again.
If my memory serves, I think it's 6..so far.
Agree it's a wonderful show

I believe Rippedman was speaking to the more typical, casual mainstream theatergoer. Not people posting on a BroadwayWorld.com message board...

I'm disappointed, though unsurprised, to see this go, but thrilled at its success. A small, LGBT-focused musical drama nabbing Best Musical and recouping on Broadway is a fantastic feat- and the fact it is the first female writing team to have such success is historic. And it seems that regional productions are already scheduled- this will have a great life across the country thanks to its size and largely female cast.
I saw it four times- once in its Public Lab presentation, once in its full Public mounting, and then twice on Broadway- and it really was a work that got better with each viewing (and not just because things changed on the way to Broadway). "Ring of Keys" will be remembered as a seminal Broadway moment, and I'm thankful that number has been preserved on the Tonys telecast.

An excellent point, Kad, and well put. This show overcame odds and has effectively landed a spot in the musical theatre/Broadway history books.

Expected but sad to see this go. I loved this show so much but the show was a monumental success in my eyes.
