I dont know vocally maybe but visually i dont see it, I like my Effies big and i dont see a reason why if Fantasia was Effie she would be put in the background and then kicked out thats no story.
They kicked her out cause she was getting too big (pg.
I dont want to start that whole Effie can be any size issue but we all know that Jennifer was not the original Effie the role was for Nell Carter who was not a small girl.

//Nobody who has participated on American Idol will be cast in this movie...mark my words. The reason: it cheapens the movie overall.//
Interesting take on it. But I believe that American Idol is no different than talent night at the Apollo Theatre, and look at the talent emerged from those contests.

Keisha Cole is irrelevant to me. There is no comparing Keisha Cole to Fantasia. Fantasia would be great as Effie in Dreamgirls, case closed.
I wonder what everyone would be saying if Fantasia WASN'T on AI and was discovered during the search for Effie as an "unknown"?

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought Effie was first asked to step to the background for Deena's more crossover voice and look and then kicked out because she had a 'tude problem with the whole thing.
If Fantasia wasn't even on AI, I doubt she would've been discovered for this movie.
Well...she was getting 'fatter all the time' cause she was, ya know, pregnant.
I know this has been said many times before, but here it is in a nutshell:
Curtis tells Effie that Deena is going to sing lead vocals now, because she has a great look and a smooth sound that will appeal to a broad audience. Effie gets upset, because "no one can see her on a record!" In a nutshell, Curtis is saying that Deena's SOUND is more "pop" and less "R&B" or "gospel." Effie chooses to focus on the look factor, but misses that Curtis has said Deena's vocal sound could "cross over" to the pop charts, while Effie's sound is more limited to just a "soul" audience. This is a sad but true statement. The larger (mostly white) audiences of the early '60s embraced girl groups but were not ready for Aretha Franklin's type of soulful singing until later in the decade. If you think about it, Diana Ross had a sweet voice, with a wide, charming appeal, but there were many "down and dirty" soul singers that could out-do her on a song. They weren't landing cross-over hits on the pop charts, though... and that is why Curtis has Deena switch to lead singer.
As far as the "getting fatter all the time" line... this is because Effie (the character) is PREGNANT with Curtis's child. She has morning sickness, has been missing rehearsals, and is growing out of her costumes. It's not that she's a big, ugly girl. She's a pregnant girl, though! The character could be pencil thin, and still get the "getting fatter all the time" comment if she's going to have a baby and no one knows it yet.

Does Effie's pregnancy go to term in the show?
Yes. Effie is kicked out of the group, goes away and has the baby on her own. It's in the 2nd Act.

Well, Fantasia sure could bring some emotion to this particular circumstance, being a single mother herself.
Absolutely. I'll bet her screen test was amazing (as has been rumored).
She has a lot of personal experience to bring to this role... as well as talent.

Fantasia is the only person that I can think of that has the voice and the stage presence to pull this off and make it truly incredible . Her performances on American Idol weren't karaoke performances , they were the real deal , and all this from someone with no formal training just innate natural talent . The Fantasia haters can bitch all they want about her getting this role ,but she's definately got the singing talent for it , her acting is as yet untested but I've a feeling that she's going to hit this out of the ballpark if she gets it . Oscar may well be her new boyfriend , get used to it !!!!
Oh please. The bashing of any performer simply because they got their start on a reality show is totally futile. The reality is -- that is simply the time we live in. If Streisand, or Aretha Franklin or Janis Joplin were starting out today -- ten bucks says they would have been discovered on a reality show.
And the asumption that no one from AI would be in the film simply because a reality show credit would "cheapen" the movie is absurd. Ten years ago I'm sure nobody would have believed Jamie "In Living Color" Foxx would be an Oscar winner.

Fantasia is going to play Effie y'all. I am sorry to those of you who don't like it but the writing is on the wall as clear as day, anyone not seeing it is in denial or doesn't know how to read.
Furthermore, Keysia Cole vs. Fantasia? Please... All one would need to do is look up the current concert reviews where Keysia is barely mentioned and if she is she's bashed beyond belief the majority of time.
Good for Keysia going top five on BET, but I'd rather get raving concert reviews, glowing endorsements from Oscer Winners, major music album nominations and of course land huge movie roles! Please!!!!

And yet another member of Team Fantasia pipes in to continue the over-the-top, distasteful hyping that will surely backfire.
Thanks, Michael Bennett, for the Jamie Foxx comments!!!! Totally makes the point that MANY people we see in movies, TV, music have other facets to their talent that we may never know about.

^^^^you...must be one of those fans or supporters that is forces your beliefs on Condon and every forum to place Fantasia in the movie. I ...say no.
No one has yet brought this issue up...but isn't she illiterate or can't read well? This is a disgrace to all actors/singers who can to cast Fantasia. Jennifer Hudson is very articulate....by the way. And lastly, if Fantasia was picked....why are they still auditioning for the role for Effie?

Yeah it will backfire. Sort of like its backfiring on Jamie Foxx, he's only got ten movies lined up. Poor fellow! I wonder if he'll be kicked off the dreamgirls cast for endorsing fantasia?
This isn't hyping, it is reading whats on the wall and accepting it.
bye now!
Ellen -- your posts are now officially offensive. Fantasia went public about her struggle to learn how to read. She can read now. And I'm happy that Jennifer Hudson is articulate. That don't mean she can act.
Auditions are held after performers are cast all the time. Its called publicity. Plus there are other small parts that could easily be filled from such searches. See GONE WITH THE WIND (1939).

I once heard Beyonce refer to Destiny's Child as a "treesome." No lie!!! So biases about articulation, judgements about struggles with reading (read her book and then we can talk) have nothing to do with her ability to perform this role.
P.S. What is so disgraceful about admitting to a problem and trying to correct it. Also, Jennifer Hudson's articulation is a matter of opinion.
If she had the part the news would have came out last week with the Danny Glover.
But i dont believe she cant read maybe at a 5th grade level
Micheal ...sorry to be offensive. But according to Fantasia herself...she has stated she don't understand or have difficult with big words (whatever that means).
Well, it's a sad state of affairs for the US education system that MANY people who graduate from high school can't read at a 5th grade level.
