Like Marquise said way upthread, Fantasia is a very talented singer and performer, but her vocal type is wrong for Effie. It's fine that we're past the big girl thing, but this is Dreamgirls. Jennifer Holliday was cast for a couple of reasons -- one of them being that she was overweight. Now lets be for real. In the movie adaptation, she needs to be a heavy set girl with a huge, sweeping, Gospel voice. That's not Fantasia.
But whatever. I'll go see it no matter who they have in it.

Fantasia isn't exactly stick thin. If she gained about 10-15 pounds, it might work. Plus, she doesn't have the drop dead looks of the other two women cast. Maybe they could use her looks as a downfall instead of her weight. I don't like her voice though.

Since my presence was requested in this thread, I decided to oblige my haters.
Kuhn, I have never assured anyone that Fantasia would get the role of Effie. I have always prefaced anything I said about her getting the role was a rumor. You might be illiterate b/c if you actually read all of my posts you would know that I wanted her for Lorell. I havn't counted her out as Effie b/c I'm actually interested in what her interpretation will be. All I want is the best Effie. If that's Fantasia then so be it.
As far as "her people" go...What would be the point of people spreading that she did well on her screen test if she wasn't in the running. That would make her look bad to the producers of the movie. Also, Jamie Foxx is not exactly in her camp. He is on her record label, so someone might see an angle there. I actually think the makers of the film are spreading these rumors b/c they are unsure of Fantasia b/c of her film experienceand want to see what people's reactions will are.
It's already been established that Fantasia is generally hated on these boards. She's not a "pure voice," which is what broadway folks are more partial to. I can't believe anyone would compare her to Ciara as an indicator of anything. Britney Spears has sold more than Aretha...SO?
Whether you like it or not Fantasia is straight up "church" and is definitly one of the new premiere soul singers. She possesses a lot of the qualities required for the role.

HATE is a VERY VERY VERY strong thing.
I don't think it's right label those who aren't fond of Fantasia as HATERS. Not fair at all. The word has a very strong meaning.

If they makers of the film are indeed speading these rumors (and I seriously doubt they're that stupid) then the movie is in very shaky hands. Competent filmmakers know whether or not an "actress" is capable of a performance without having to run to the Internet and gauge the common's man's opinion, especially when the common man hasn't even seen her screen test. Not to mention, they'd be wasting a large amount of studio money giving screen tests to women who aren't even in the running. Ridiculous theory.

Fantie tries to hard to be the next Mary J. Blige which isn't happening. She will NEVER bring out the raw emotion in a song like Blige does and is known for.

Well, Condon and Geffen have proven themselves, so if Fantasia has been chosen for the role will keep it closed? And who said anything about them running to the internet. News about Fantasia has been on Access Hollywood/ET and in the papers. This is not just a message board thing. And you bring up an excellent point about not having seen her screen test. So, how could you have the nerve to speak about her in this role. Get ouf ot the thread. Jamie Foxx is in a much better position to judge how Fantasia's screentest went (most likely he's seen it)than we are. Obviously, there's a hold up, for him to push for her like that in the media. I suppose I should say as well that I like "Effie" with some weight on those bones as well, It just plays better that way when she is asked to step aside for DJ., I KNOW Effie is pregnant, But it has mor impact when she has the "Big Momma" look as well, IMHO.

Whoa, this thread is pretty hot. Well, if none of the AI ladies, including Jennifer Hudson, hadn't been on the show, then I guess none of them would have gotten a shot at auditioning.

Sorry, I don't have proof but I've seen her fans bragging about it at length, as if that's a GOOD thing, so I assumed there was something concrete to give them this idea.

Oh, you are talking about the whole Denzel coaching her for a private screen test paid for by Clive rumour. That's not the same thing as paying Condon for an official screen test. As rumours go, it sure was interesting, but unconfirmed.

I definately think Fantasia is a great choice for this role, and more so than J. Hudson though she is a good singer. When you carry on a role you should be able to capture the original feeling of that character but bring your own passion to it vocally and acting wise. Fantasia has soul grit and a great voice and from what the director said she can ACT!!! I cant wait to see shawdy tear into that role and that roles signature song!

Let us remember that this is a big screen production. This is not some small time, cheesy, sleazy Broadway production. Broadway in its current state has declined dramatically from the original music theater days of Ellington, Kern, Gershwin, Berlin et al.
Effie needs a singing-actress with a huge personality for portrayal on the big screen. Super-talented vocally, sexy and infectious personality Fantasia came along at precisely the right time to enliven Effie as has never before been accomplished!
