With many versions out there in different languages, which are your favorites.
1) CABARET: The film soundtrack:
Nothing beats Liza and Joel. NOTHING!
2) CABARET: 2006 Lyric Theatre Cast:
The cast and their vocals are AMAZING and the arrangements are spectacular. This is actually the only CABARET recording that I can listen through the entire thing without skipping.
So, what are your choices?
I've heard four recordings (Original Broadway, Soundtrack, Broadway Revival, and Studio Cast) and I have to say that the Broadway Revival is my favorite by far. The soundtrack comes in at second, but it doesn't include some of my favorites from the show ("So What", "Perfectly Marvelous", and "It Couldn't Please Me More").
Another vote for the revival cast. I think it's a sublime CD.
I do love the soundtrack (Liza's "Cabaret" is pure bliss), but the revival comes out on top for me.

I think there was a thread on this, but I love Cabaret, so here goes:
My favorites are def the movie soundtrack and the OBC recording
From the movie soundtrack, I love Willkommen, Maybe This Time, and the Money Song. Liza and Joel are just amazing
From the Original Broadway, I really love "Perfectly Marvelous," particularly the instrumentations.
And from the Revival I like the "Dont Tell Mama" version, but I dont think I like it more than the OBC.
It sucks that the original recording doesnt have I Dont Care Much, except for the bonus track which isnt with the full orchestra
There probably was a thread about this, but I couldn't find it.
I like aspects of the REVIVIAL but Sally's voice is so irritating and off key most of the time. I understand that she isn't supposed to be the greatest singer, but she makes my ears hurt. haha. The Sally in the LYRIC CAST is not the greatest either, but at least she stays on pitch.
I think the OBC is my favorite. Jill Hayworth is my favorite recorded Sally (I have not heard Judi Dench) and Joel Gray is a truly gifted performer and his Emcee, though not as dark as Alan Cummings is fascinating in his own way. Also, Lotta Lenya is not to be missed!! She steals every song she sings.
The revival recording is very dark, which I really love, except some of the performances do not come up to scratch. Mary Louise Wilson is just eh and Natasha Richardson goes from OK to extremely haunting. Even though her singing is very hard to get used to, if you get passed that, her interpretation of Sally Bowles should send shivers down your spine!
The movie is a very different entity. The movie cuts out the characters of the landlord and her boyfriend and cuts a few other songs as well. I love Joel Grey on the soundtrack and I love Liza's "Maybe This Time." But, I absolutely hate Liza's singing and the orchestrations for the title song.
Wickedfan, what are your opnions on the Studio recording? I am debating whether to get it or not?

jewishboy- I hated it. It sounds thin and cheap.
Revival!
OBC cast recording.
Jill Hayworth is still my favorite recorded Sally. Lotte Lenya grounds the recording and Joel Grey is superb.
My only complaint about the OBC is Bert Convey. I can't get it out of my mind that he became a game show host.
The Film soundtrack is OK to listen to. Liza isn't enough of a fraud to me ..at least in the performing talent department. Plus, I feel I should go to an Narcotics Anonymous meeting evertime I hear her sing.
Great, I can save some money now. By the way there is a clip on Y**Tu** of Ms. Richardson doing the title song. It is very haunting, but unfortunately, the video messes up towards the end.

Hm, tricky for me. I think out of the Soundtrack, 2006 London, and 1998 Revival, the 2006 London is the only one that I really can sit through the whole thing.
I really don't like listening to the movie, I'd rather watch it.
The 2006 I think has a better cast than the 1998 with the exception of Alan. I do like a lot of the 1998 orchestrations, but overall I LOVE the Sally, Schnieder, Schultz, and Cliff vocals from the London cast.
Yay, C for Company. Finally, some agrees with me on the 2006 recording. haha.
Spidey,
You have to give the new French recording a try. It was recorded live and is really awesome.
The OBC. Jill Haworth is my favorite of all the recorded Sallys. I love her "Don't Tell Mama" and prefer her "Cabaret" to Minnellis.

I could never make up mind. The Vienna has some interesting takes on tunes you already know, so its fun to see how they do it.
But I've made a mix from the OBC, OLC, NBC, Soundtrack and the complete Jay recording (for completeness) and that's the one I listen to now.
Judi Dench's Sally really might top them all. She's really startling. Sort of what Natasha was doing, but better.
The original. Nothing compares, though I like the rinky dink orchestrations and Liza and Joel on the film soundtrack.
Off topic question. When is this show coming back to Broadway?
Not for some time, I hope. Don't get me wrong. Cabaret is a wonderful show, but it just closed. Revive The Rink if you want another Kander and Ebb revival!
Uh, jv, Cabaret has pretty much announced it's coming back to Broadway.

That French recording that was just made is really good, eh? I've wanted that before I got the latest London one, I really should look for it now.
Another vote for the 2006 London cast recording! Absolutely love it - saw the cast four times and never stop listening to it.
It might change if I had the entire Judi Dench recording, but alas, I only have bits of it.
