Posted: 5/30/05 at 2:06pmI like the Hirschfeld as well. It's just charming.

Posted: 5/30/05 at 2:07pmI haven't been in all that many, but out of the ones I've seen shows in I really enjoyed the Marquis, Nederlander, and Golden Theater. They all felt very intimate and close to the action. I did not particularly enjoy the Gershwin. Its just so.... cavernous!

The Biltmore for plays, no doubt. I love the way they renovated it...
For musicals I would have to say the Belasco because its so gorgeous - its unfortunate that its last musical tenant was such a wreck.

Posted: 5/30/05 at 3:51pmThe Hirschfeld is gorgeous. It's my favorite. I must give props however to the Marquis for having some of the most comfy seats and best sight lines.

For plays: Kerr, Lyceum, Biltmore, Booth
For musicals: Plymouth, Hirschfeld, O'Neill
EDIT: I mean, the Gerry Schoenfeld Theater...

I liked the Vivian Beaumont.
Call me crazy, but I also enjoyed Circle in the Square.
I guess I like the idea of thrust stages.
It gives the director and production so many more options. And it's a lot of fun to see a show from so many different angles. It really makes you feel like you're in the show. Or at least in the same environment as the characters. Piazza and Spelling Bee do a wonderful job at utilizing the thrust setting.

I love the Booth for plays and I like the Vivian Beaumont for musicals, it's such a great space.
I think if they fixed up Circle in the Square I would like it, I mean, I LOVE the Mark Taper in LA and it's the same sort of idea...but the Mark Taper is nicer :)

I really like the Marquis. Even in the back row of the mezz, I felt very close to the action. I felt the same at the Minskoff, and loved the view of Broadway from the mezz lobby.
The seats at the Broadway are extremely uncomfortable. I spent an entire performance of Miss Saigon with a spring in my butt.

I love the Nederlander because I feel like I'm back at home whenever I go there.
I like the Imperial a lot, maybe because I've seen three different shows there and the palace is gorgeous.
#13re: Favorite Broadway Theatres
Posted: 5/30/05 at 5:45pmI love the intimacy of the Golden. New Amsterdam is beautiful. I love the Imperial too.

Except the Marquis' orchestra back row or two - the mezzanine cuts off the whole top of the proscenium, and they still charge full-price seats. When we saw Millie, we couldn't read the subtitles b/c the upper sightline was obscured. Bah!
Love the AA for drama.

The Majestic by Herbert J Krapp which looks very similar to a theater in Philadelphia called, I believe , the Forrest. I believe Mr Krapp was the architect on that as well. He also did the Walter Kerr

The St. James.
Yay!
#18re: Favorite Broadway Theatres
Posted: 5/30/05 at 7:00pmThe Majestic, the St. James, Studio 54, and the Nederlander is pretty darned nifty.

Posted: 5/30/05 at 7:03pmStudio 54 is indeed a nice house. It still has the stud lighting on the walls from its Studio 54 heydey days. The stage is hugh befitting its days originally as an opera house. The original chandelier is gone as are the smaller ones but a very nice looking house indeed

Posted: 5/30/05 at 7:42pmI could LIVE in the Gershwin. I love it. I also really like the Neil Simon, the actual theatre is so beautiful, and the stage works amazingly for Hairspray.
