Gillian Anderson & Billy Crudup to star in West End VIRGINIA WOOLF, dir. Marianne Elliott

The production will star Gillian Anderson as Martha and Billy Crudup as George, alongside Josh Dylan as Nick and Phoebe Horn as Honey. It will be directed by Marianne Elliott. Sonia Friedman Productions, in association with Nica Burns, will produce the show, which will run at @sohoplace from 21 September to 19 December 2026, with a press night on 30 September. The production will be staged in the round.

I couldn't imagine better casting for this play right now. These two would also be magnificent in The Goat, but that is asking for too much of a good thing. I'm only sorry they won't be running at the same time as Tarantino's play, because I doubt I can afford two trips to London within such a short time. I'll be taking one of those trips, though. No doubt at all about that.

I've never been so happy for a December business trip in all my life (though not 100% true, cause I saw The Bridge's Into the Woods last December). Got my ticket!

If it comes to Broadway and Gillian Anderson chooses not to come with it,I wonder how Katrina Lenk would be as the female lead. She's worked with Elliot before and she's a great dramatic actress too. She has done some plays as well as musicals,though mainly off-Broadway.

I'm one of the lucky few who got to see it, but I doubt it will. If they were ever going to bring it back, it would've been the perfect choice for Rudin's return vs. Salesman, a play that had a Broadway revival three years prior. You'd have all the "well, you know the production never really got its due, and it was fantastic" chatter to combat the anti-Rudin stuff. Plus, I have a friend who had the chance to speak with Metcalf briefly and asked whether it would have a future life, and Metcalf emphatically said no. Of course, actors lie about these things all the time. Maybe things change, maybe it was a letting go of the rights issue, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I say this as someone who would love to see it return in some capacity.

Everett, I remember feeling "meh" about. Granted, he was a replacement for Izzard, so he had the least time, and fair game; it was a preview, but he felt behind the other performers.

Tovey, I thought, was the best Nick I've had the pleasure of seeing. Nick is usually the role I pay the least attention to. Not that it's underwritten, or the play discards the character, but you pretty much know what to expect; every other character has flashy moments. Tovey made it a meal. Both frustrating yet sympathetic. I've never left a production of Woolf with sympathy for the character as I had with his portrayal. Which carries on to,

Ferran as Honey, who was sublime. Often, Honey, as a character, comes off as an easy mark. The cluelessness and earnestness can enter Pollyanna territory, but Ferran felt like such a real person. Someone sharp, but without the educational references. Her humiliation made my stomach hurt, because it felt like she didn't deserve it.

Metcalf, as always, was spectacular. Within the first five minutes onstage, she redefined the role.

It's hard to put into words, but I've never felt or understood Nick & Honey as much as I did with that revival. And I'm a Who's Afraid enthusiast! I am so sad it didn't get to have a life. I believe after every act, a wall of the very realistic set disappeared, with the final act being performed in a sea of dark nothingness with a staircase.
