The Cameron Mackintosh shows always have great logos but I really like the one for Oliver! which was used for the Palladium production and the current revival at the Drury Lane.

Not a fan of the show but I think the artwork for the 1993 London Production of Grease and subsequent productions after it suit the show.

Not a fan. It reminds me of ice cubes, and I get that it's part of the set, but it's a weird logo I think.

Les Mis, I think is pretty awesome. As is Aida's. And I've always loved Wicked's: it always made it seem to me that the show had some sort of fantastic secret. hehe.

I do like the old Hair artwork better. At first I really disliked the new Hair one, but have since grown to love it. I adore the Actor's fund one, cause it's so silly.

Because I look different you think I'm subversive.

Wait, where's the MOVIN' OUT logo? I didn't see it.
...And so, there I was at the stage door for "Equus". The enthused avalanche of "Harry Potter" fans was literally pushing me into the barricades. As I was thrust face-first into Daniel Radcliffe's hat, I suddenly felt the thumb of a lanky gentleman behind me pressing firmly into my back. It was then that I realized that both of his hands had Playbills, and that both arms were outstretched in front of me...

I'm not a huge fan of the current Shrek artwork. I just think it makes them look kind of creepy. And why is Gingy on Shrek's shoulder since he was not really a main point in the show?

I've gotten confused about the Les Mis art. I always assumed it was Cosette, but in one of the [title of show] banner ads, Hunter says that "Les MIs maximized Eponine's Face!" Who is is?

Young Cosette.

re: Favorite and Least Favorite Artwork

The use of the Bayard etching for "Les Miserables" is clever but the adaptive re-use of it for any season or occasion is superb. Hats off to Cameron and his boys in the art dept. for that one.

Hairspray's ad, with Tracy's face cut off at the midpoint works on so many levels. It's fun, it makes you curious, the blue hair attracts your eye and it works on deeper, psychological levels as well. Is she hiding, ashamed, emerging, teasing? It's a great ad for a show about a woman finding her identity.

Pretty much anything by James McMullan. His posters for Lincoln Center Theatre have been excellent, sometimes poetic. You want a lesson in the art of making a great poster? Look at his work for House of Blue Leaves, Anything Goes, The Front Page, Carousel, Six Degrees of Separation, The Heiress and Seascape. Nearly everytyhing he's done (including the never-used but always seen poster for LCT's Waiting for Godot 20 years ago) is brilliant and completely appropriate for the production. There's a book called "The Theatre Posters of James McMullan" that has every poster he had designed up until that point (199re: re: re: re: Favorite and Least Favorite Artwork, with commentary by him on the process of creating said poster (e.g. inspiration, angles, purpose etc.) It's a great read and pretty much defines what great posters are.
