"If present day Tevye is perhaps his grandson, how would that spoil the ending?"
That's stretching....
But if that's Sher's intention then he needs to clearly indicate in in the piece. Judging by the comments of those who have seen the show, he hasn't...

Oh, why would we question why things might have to come up through the back of the stage within a production we didn't see, then?! This is certainly the strangest preview thread in a while...

This preview thread is going to be a bit glorious from the way it's going.
Now that it's been explained to me (no one in our group picked up on this), I can see why Burstein was changing into costume. Perhaps I should have read this thread first...

I never questioned why. I explained why the opening was there based on what I was told.
Sounds like Sher borrowed a bit from Man Of La Mancha having Tevye change into character on stage. I have hated Jessica Hecht in everything i have seen her in. Her voice is so grating. But the score to Fiddler is just perfect and the story is universal. Hope it is great.
FYI (since now two people have said it): your curiosity has been piqued. It hasn't peaked. Unless you mean you've reached your maximum level of curiosity, I guess.
Exactly hork, my curiosity levels of Bartlett Sher's revival of Fiddler on the Roof have indeed peaked to the highest levels possible since the first preview reports have come in.

Uh, the two people? One of whom thought it worked brilliantly but didn't want to spoil it? Considering I was able to at least surmise something resembling the intention of the staging based off of one sentence, it is hardly opaque.
And Hamilton22 is not Pinto. If ANYONE here is Pinto, it's obviously FunnyGirl5- particularly after that last comment.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
