Don't quite know how I feel about Sutton in the role still, but I'm sure she'll pull out all the guns. The woman is a dynamo!
That being said, I'm loving this extended tap break, truly amazing. There were a few moments when my jaw dropped. I've very excited by this.
We've def seen a preview of what the Tony's will look like this year!

Every revival of an old musical should be assigned a Musical Comedy Yenta to inform the director, choreographer, actors and designers on how the show should be done.
Heck, the Yenta would have the power to hire and fire at the drop of a hat.

My major problem with this IS Sutton. I LOVED her in Drowsy, I felt she was perfect, but nothing else she has done has impressed me. It doesn't feel like anything new from her vocally. She just has that voice where everything is sung the same way. I want to be blown away, especially when you have a number that's as high-energy as this one. Closing my eyes, I didn't get that. I know it's still early on, but vocally, not much will change from this point.
I am looking forward to this, mainly to see Laura.

"But saying that it's not correct for the period of the show is just not correct.
Sorry if I wasn't clear. I didn't mean that Sutton is no Jean Harlow. I feel as though Sutton as Reno is no Jean Harlow, or at least she shouldn't be. I don't think of Reno as a bombshell or as a sex symbol, so I'm not really sure why Sutton is going for that characterization. I just don't think of Reno as a slinky, sexy type. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm just used to seeing versions where Reno is played more straight-laced.
And Pal Joey, though Trish may think the choreography is old school, I see nothing old school about it. I think it's old school in size, length, and production value, but the actual choreography itself... the steps... is contemporary.

"I know I sound silly. Please forgive, but for a theatre novice - what do you mean by marking?"
Marking is not doing everything full-out and really holding back. It's like just doing the steps without energy/emotion.

I freaking adore this show.
I think it's important to note the stage manager's tape on the floor, which is traversed by a lot of people in this number often - I think that insinuates there will be more levels in this number than this rehearsal allows.
Joel Grey is going to be perfection. His and Sutton's "Friendship" but a huge grin on my face and they had barely started it.
And per Foster, I think she's in great shape. She sounds incredible, and I think as an actress, she takes her rehearsal time very seriously and once she refines things, she'll blow it out of the park. That's a long number. she's certainly not marking. Like Osnes says in her interview, she's probably still at the point where she has to think about what comes next in the 6 minutes of tapping. From the way everyone is talking about the show, it sounds like Marshall is making everyone dance their asses off.
I'm highly optimistic and super excited. It's already better than "Bye Bye Birdie".

Posted: 2/19/11 at 1:29amI have no opinions really, yet, but I just want to say that I've heard Sutton say more than once that she always "finds her character and humor" with an audience. So I'll put money on what we get from her will be completely different than what we are seeing here.

"but I just want to say that I've heard Sutton say more than once that she always finds her character... with an audience."
I really hope that is not true because that would make her a "money player" and as a Director/Choreographer there is nothing more frustrating than an actor who doesn't really start performing and/or developing a character until there is an audience... and I'm a huge Sutton Foster fan.

Never "old school" someone from the old school.

Posted: 2/19/11 at 6:10pmLikewise. But your comparison made no sense. Bottom line, for me at least, is that i never find any of Marshall's choreography that outstanding or even signature. I felt the same way about her brother Rob. It was always serviceable work. It seems to run in the family.

Don't misunderstand, I've seen her rehearse and she definitely brings choices/character to rehearsal. She just needs a couple of previews to really find her way and sparkle.
I also don't see a problem in having a "pin up/sexy/slinky" Reno. She's an evangelical nightclub singer and also is sexually linked to Billy, Evelyn, and even Moonface in some productions I've seen. Why couldn't she be sexy? I think we're just so used to seeing the Merman/Patti type. I look forward to seeing a new Reno, good or bad.

Posted: 2/19/11 at 8:43pmMaybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but I feel as if one of the main complaints lobbed her way when the casting was first announced was that she WASN'T sexy enough for the part. Now she's too sexy?

I think we're just so used to seeing the Merman/Patti type.
You do realize, don't you, that when Merman played Reno, she wasn't an old battle-ax with a voice like a foghorn?
She was 26 and fairly petite and perky, and her voice was powerful but much sweeter than the voice we know from her 1950s and 1960s performances.

BJH! I do respect "taste" and you are totally entitled to your opinion of course. But I am very encouraging of contemporary takes on the classics of the form, for I believe that, even if rarely, every now and again, one will "hit" and give new life and even meaning to the original.
That said, having played Moonface Martin, it is work sometimes to practice what I preach!!
