Posted: 10/18/07 at 2:42amYEAH!!!! I'm with you, jaystarr. I was also a kid when this was on Broadway, and my parents would never take me to see it. Seeing the original show with Ann Reinking would have been FABULOUS, but I'm excited that I have a chance to see it at all!!!

Posted: 10/18/07 at 8:51ami wonder if they're going to keep "Here You Come Again" in it now that "9 to 5" will be coming to Broadway with the exact same song?

Posted: 10/18/07 at 8:51amPlease add Michael Kidd to the list of under-appreciated director/choreographers from the past. His shows include the obc's of FINIAN'S RAINBOW, GUYS AND DOLLS, CAN-CAN, LI'L ABNER, DESTRY RIDES AGAIN(where he got slapped by star Dolores Gray), WILDCAT, SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING, and THE ROTHSCHILDS. As one can see, not all of his shows were hits, But Kidd was usually singled out for doing an excellent job as director and/or choreographer.

Being 13 when DANCIN' opened on Broadway in 1978. Being a huge fan of Bob Fosse's work for several years by that time. Spending my summers in NYC. I lost count how many times I saw DANCIN', not counting the other times me and my cousins 2nd Acted it.
There are no adjectives to describe what it was like seeing Ann Reinking in her glory back then, especially her manic attack on the Trumpet Solo in the final "Sing! Sing! Sing!" number. Those legs. That hair. Its still quite a vivid memory for me. Elizabeth Parkinson's attempt on the number in FOSSE was quite tepid, though Dylis Corman did an adequate job in the final cast and can be seen doing it in the DVD issue of the show.
Here's yours truly with La Reinking, backstage at Broadhurst Theatre during her brief one-week run in FOSSE:

^^ nice pic !! thanks for posting.. I am a big fan of Ann Reinking. I saw her at Chicago Revival in 1997 and I love every minute of it. I also saw the Boston's try-out of FOSSE and completely swept away by Bob Fosse's chreography. I am very excited to see this one

EDIT : BTW- luv "Benny Goodman's SING, SING, SING ! "

Posted: 10/18/07 at 10:38amI have mixed feelings about this. Yes, I would probably see it, but of all the Fosse works out there, why this one? As stated before, most of it was already revived in Fosse. Why not Pippin (which would ultimately be hated in any revival anyway simply for not being the original production with the original cast) or go out on a limb with a revised production of Redhead or New Girl in Town? Or even Big Deal? Please SOMETHING other than Sing, Sing, Sing and Mr. Bojangles. I guess we can just be grateful it doesn't include Hey, Big Spender or All That Jazz for the millionth time.

"i wonder if they're going to keep "Here You Come Again" in it now that "9 to 5" will be coming to Broadway with the exact same song?"
That number was nothing more than 3 women sitting on bar stools in front of the curtain singing (mostly off pitch). It was one of Broadway's more famous "WTF was that??" moments.

My best friend took me to Dancin' for my 15th birthday. The one thing I took from the show was a huge headache because the music was so loud.
I still have the sovenir program, but the numbers that stand out in my mind (in no particular order) were Sing, Sing, Sing; the number where the dancers wore body suits with stripes and performed it under "black light"; and for some reason, "Here You Come Again", which I believe was just vocals.

Posted: 10/18/07 at 3:31pmThis sounds great! While I'm not looking for a stale recreation (ala A Chorus Line) I do hope they don't go down the route of using all black. That simply was not Fosse. Though he used black a lot, there were colorful costumes in his various shows. I'd love to see some of the original costumes and sets recreated.

"I do hope they don't go down the route of using all black."
Ugh. That drove me crazy at FOSSE. All black costumes...all black scenery...couldn't see much choreography!
The original set for DANCIN' was designed by Peter Larkin. I remember he had some clever fabric panels serving as a backdrop for lots of the evening. The fabric would be turned and twisted to create different looks for different moods. And the costumes by Willa Kim (I think?) were most colorful.

Anyone know who is producing this?
Or to be more exact, who is presenting the Toronto tryout?
Edit: I answered my own question:
"Dancin' " is produced by Whiskey Tango and Elaine Krauss, in association with Dancap Prods.

Posted: 10/19/07 at 10:46amDancers today do not have the bodies that they had in the 70's. Fosse's choreography needs long and lean dancers not muscular, Chelsea boys like they had in Fosse.

Posted: 10/20/07 at 8:40pmthere was a Pippin tour came thru TO about a yr ago. "prior to Broadway". It really made u aware of how much the succes of a show is based on the mix of director performers & venue. This Pippin was mediocre to be kind ( Mickey Dolenz was Charlemange)

"Graciela Daniele will direct, Ann Reinking will artistic direct, Kathryn Doby will recreate choreography, and Nicole Fosse will advise the Broadway revival of Bob Fosse's DANCIN', which will hit the Rialto in Spring, 2009, following a tryout in Toronto."
This is like a dream come true for me. Graciela Daniele is an inspiration to me and revival of any Fosse show makes me excited as all hell.

Nicole is married and lives in Woodstock Vermont where Gwen died. Seems kind of pointless to revive this when much of it was mediocre. I remember the during the original run, there was quite a cocaine problem at Dancin' -- it was the place to go to get a "toot".
Anybody got any good stories about Vicki Frederick?
