Ok. Adult Alison is played by a live actress and the rest is animated in the style of Persopolis.

I think that would work. This also reminds me of one of my favorite autobiographical graphic novel film adaptations, American Splendor.

I love that, especially if it's done in a more adult style animation and not made childish looking (even for fun scenes). Would be so phenomenal to see how Telephone Wire would be handled - would young actress step into the cartoon, or would the whole scene become live action? It could be a very effective way of translating the show to the movie medium.

Do you think the musical would be adapted before a "straight" version of the graphic novel? Either way, I like the Persepolis idea.

I don't think you've gone far enough with the stylistic conceit. The whole flashback should flicker in and out of animation into live action and vice versa as Alison depicts the "real," the "imagined" and so on. Really play with the dichotomy of what is and is not documentary or artistic license.

^ so far I agree with all these comments. I really think a film version of Fun Home would do well during the award season. Hugh Jackman as Bruce almost seems too obvious

I don't know about animation for Fun Home. To me, one of the most devastating moments of the show is toward the end. Throughout all the scenes, Bruce has been speaking directly to Small Alison or Medium Alison, while Alison observes from the background. Right before Telephone Wire, he turns instead to Alison and addresses her, and it is quietly shocking that the adult writer has finally merged with her younger selves as a result of her long journey.
How would that be accomplished with animation vs. live action?

It's a different medium, so I don't think you'd need it to be presented like it is in the musical. It could be a straight forward story. I like the idea of her watching the story unfold. One of the movies I always think about is Manderlay. I love that it took place on a soundstage, but yet, felt like a movie. I think this concept could work beautifully for Fun Home, but I do love the cartoon idea since it was a graphic novel.

Honestly, I'd love to see a live production that makes use of multi-media and projection effects in the manner of Brief Encounter or the Menier/Roundabout revival of Sunday in the Park with George. I think it would be really powerful seeing the actors stepping into and out of projections and animations based on the artwork from the graphic novel.

I think some really creative directors could really do some incredible work with this translation from stage to screen.
