"Grey Gardens."
Act 1 of Grey Gardens would certainly beg to differ.

I was going to mention that in my first post but I figured Act 2 is still more factual than all of Fun Home, so I didn't think it mattered.

I agree that much of the dialogue is pretty verbatim from the documentary, so I guess that's not completely untrue. I don't really know exactly how factual Fun Home is, but it's pretty true to the graphic novel, which is a memoir...although it's certainly possible she invented some details.

I don't think she invented anything. She put down exactly what she remembered. Of course, she spends a LOT of time discussing the inaccuracy of human memory. So there's that.

I didn't mean she did it to be dishonest, but writers frequently add detail for a dramatic effect.

That's exactly what I was implying. I don't think it's dishonest, but you can't call it the most factual musical, by a long shot, simply because it's based on a memoir. I don't think Alison is a liar at all, but like Namo said, she herself talked a lot about human memory error. I've yet to find a musical more factual than the second act of Grey Gardens because it's literally the first Broadway musical (perhaps the first musical ever?) to be based on a documentary. And I do not hate Fun Home at all, before anybody claims that I do. But then again, this is for opinions sake!

Ah, but, it's a big leap to assume the documentary documented "reality" or "facts". Seriously.

Posted: 6/24/15 at 1:20amI don't know if you've seen the documentary, but there isn't much to fake in it. It's literally just their daily life. It's not like they can fake much from just cameras being pointed at two women with poor living conditions. You know what I mean? Like, I can't imagine how they could fake something so minuscule.

So is something that is a a verbatim copy of a very short period of time more "factual" than something that covers a lifetime from its author's memory? I'm saying there are limitations to both.

No, you're totally totally right.

Basically Tennesse Williams and Alison Bechdel and Kron/Tesori remind us of the importance AND the inexactness of our memories.
