I’m so much in love with Green’s review which acknowledges the play’s imperfections but celebrates how beautifully unlikely it is that we got to see it on this grand scale at all. A Mac super fan, I did love how he found new ways into his persistent themes of the power of art, the question of whether hope for humanity is futile, and how one can best approach morality.

It’s a challenging show that will certainly be polarizing, but what a thrill that we had the chance to see it done with the best actors, director, and designers bringing it most fully to life. How wonderfully improbable such a production is. And love it or hate it, isn’t it thrilling to see artists taking big swings?

GARY reviews don't tell us much for Tony predictions. Nathan's in the running for the 5th slot alongside Johnny Lee Miller, Tracy Letts, and Michael Urie. White will get nominated in Featured (+ possibly Nielsen depending on category placement), and probably all 4 design categories.

I think they meant those actors are vying for the fifth slot, not that that’s going to be the category.

I was at the first preview of GARY, and while I didn't hate the show, I certainly didn't love it. I think my main problems were with the overall pacing and a rather restrained performance from Nielsen (which is of course understandable considering it was her first performance after a week of rehearsal). It sounds like these things are definitely no longer an issue, though. I also know George C. Wolfe's shows evolve a great deal during previews. I think I may need to make a return to visit to this one.

Yep, sorry, that was confusingly worded! I think Cranson, Daniels, Driver, and Considine are definitely in the category, with Lane, Miller, Letts, and Urie vying for the final slot.

I think you should revisit it. I found nothing wrong with the pacing and Nielsen is anything but restrained (I found myself not even being able to picture Martin in the role). I thought she was wonderful, as are they all.

I’m excited this play got some good notices and a ringing endorsement from the Times. How often do we get something so absurd to play Broadway, and not just that, to have it done by masters and legends filling every department? Bravo to Taylor Mac for a spectacular Broadway debut! I hope to see more of his work produced at this level for the confused masses of commercial NYC theatre.

Lithgow either. I think there will almost certainly be more than five nominees in this category this year.

On topic, I’m thrilled to see that so much of these Gary reviews are positive. Seeing the show tomorrow and just got that much more excited!

With 1 slot to fill this past weekend, we asked the BWW gang which show to see. ...CONSTITUTION... and GARY... got the most votes and we threw our lot to GARY and crossed our fingers. TKTS put us in 4th row center.

OH MY LORD was that a fantastic show!! What's better than three actor/clowns at the very top of their game living this insane life for 90 minutes, speaking those gorgeous couplets that veer from scatalogical to heartbreakingly sweet? Watching Nathan Lane scamper over Santo Loquasto's magical pile of corpses without a false step, counting all the props Kristine Neilsen has to operate in the space of one matinee, enjoying Julie White's compulsion to take constant tragedy and turn it into joy, just joy. Which is really the moral of the whole exercise, isn't? How to take the ugliness that surrounds us and turn it into joy! Taylor Mac (and George Wolfe and Ann Roth and on and on...) all showed us how to make that joy happen where you'd  least expect it. We feel so lucky to have seen this unlikely production that folks will be talking about for years.

^ ^ ^ Well THIS has me all excited, not that I wasn’t before. But the show looks like so much craziness, and I need something like that for this trip. All seriousness-in-great-theatre aside, once in awhile you need this kind of insanity. Very much looking for to it, and whatever souvenirs I collect. Love the Playbill cover too!

Well, we hated it, but I'm glad it got good reviews as I am always in favor of new and original material being produced on Broadway.

My friend, who works in local theater and has vast theatrical knowledge, somehow read that New York Times review and convinced himself it was a pan. He actually said Green hated if. I quoted to him that closing paragraph where Green said he’s glad it’s on Broadway and he replied, “not a ringing endorsement.” Of course, he also chose to see King Kong and had zero interest in seeing Fiddler and I’m pretty sure he voted for Trump so his judgment was already suspect.

Update: He also thought Beetlejuice was almost as good as and maybe as good as Hadestown.

Lol this is the least enthusiastic Critic's Pick I've ever read from the Times (maybe tied with the one for Hillary and Clinton). Do the producers have something on them, or what?

My theory is that Lithgow gets petitioned to Featured, where he has a very good shot of winning the award. I doubt he'd be nominated if they keep him in Leading.
