Saw this tonight - sat next to Alice Ripley no less - and agree with most of the reviews. It's a mess, but it's an enjoyable mess. I think it starts very strong, but then kind of lags, and then revs up again. I've seen all the actors do other work - and great work at that - so I don't know why it felt like they were actively shouting at us at times. I felt bad for Julie White's voice. I felt like it was going to give out at any minute. But I loved the design, but I thought some of the physical comedy was a bit telegraphed. It didn't seem spontaneous and therefore made the joke a little ho-hum. All in all, I'd recommend it, but not sure I'd say it's a must see unless you're a fan of the actors - which I am.

Incredible article with the details of what happened to Andrea (interestingly, at one point they tried to continue the show with her but it wasn't working), and the logistics behind how everyone came together to save the show. At one point, they even considered having script in hand in public performances for Nielsen!
I wish we had detailed accounts like this of all shows.

Thanks for posting that, a great read! one question: what was the reference to Shirley MacLaine? A jab at her belief in previous lives?

Just caught GARY for the second time this afternoon after seeing the first preview. The performances are definitely a lot more polished, and the show itself and pacing are a lot tighter. That being said, I STILL just didn't LOVE this... While I am glad I gave this show a second chance (especially considering I was at the first preview before), I can't say that my opinion on the show has changed.

It’s likely a direct reference to when MacLaine was an understudy to Carol Haney in The Pajama Game and had to suddenly take the role full time when Haney broke her ankle, and MacLaine was discovered by Paramount from that performance

Loved that piece. Loved hearing how that all went down and how committed they were to the vision and ambition of the play.

I'd give it at least two more times before you decide for sure...

I was the absolute last row of the Booth when I saw this and did not see this as a problem. I understand it would be harder for some people to see those expressions, but he wipes it off near the beginning of the show, so that's another reason why that wasn't a huge for me.
