I didn't know that. Does it matter which Times reviewer writes about the show with regard to box office sales or is it just "The Times" name that carries the most heft. Just wondering.

Except Isherwood reviewed PIPPIN at ART and Brantley reviewed it on Broadway.

Yeah, that seems to be the standard practice, PIPPIN aside.

Speaking about theater writers, does anyone know where Feingold, former Village Voice writer went? I liked his writing very much.
Feingold writes a bi-sometimes-tri weekly column for Theatremania called Thinking About Theatre. It's more history-minded and not as incisive as his reviews (although he was one of the few that liked the BETRAYAL revival.)
Glad this is getting the reviews it deserves! And WOW for Isherwood calling Mays the performance of the season already. He basically says that he will win a Tony.
"Mr. Mays won a Tony Award for playing multiple roles in the Pulitzer Prize-winning solo show “I Am My Own Wife,” but the chameleonic performance he gives here makes even that feat seem simple — a matter of filing your nails while whistling “Edelweiss,” say. In a true tour de force that is hardly likely to be bettered on Broadway this season (apologies to the magnificent Mark Rylance, and those two knights, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, performing Beckett and Pinter in repertory), Mr. Mays sings, dances, ice-skates, bicycles and generally romps through some eight roles — flipping among personas male, female and somewhere in between — at a pace that sets your head spinning."
Thanks BB. I'm really glad the journalists gave such good reviews for this show. Isherwood gave some seriously high praise there. I hope the positive reviews translates into a nice profitable and extended run.
Well, there you have it. Congratulations to everyone involved!
My only quibble with Mr. Isherwood is his comparison of the 2 Jefferson Mays performances ( I Am My Own Wife vs Gentleman's Guide). In the former he played all the characters which numbered over 40. He changed characters instantaneously. It was freakin unbelievable.

These reviews for Mays are overwhelmingly positive. That seems to be the one thing every critic so far can agree on.

Fantastic!
And, GoSmile... thanks for the great memories. I totally used to channel switch back and forth to see what the TV reviewers were saying. I'd kind of forgotten until you reminded me with your post.
The Post's reviews usually don't pop up until later in the night/early morning.
I'm surprised Time Out NY's review isn't up yet. Theirs is usually one of the first to be posted.

I haven't read reviews like that for a musical comedy actor since Robert Lindsay in ME AND MY GIRL.

even with the positive reviews, this still won't be here past the holidays, this should have opened in March.

How do you know?
And by the way, where are those first-preview pedants who told us all how inferior the show was compared to the movie, and how Mays's performance fell short of the mark?

What movie?
If they're anything like you, I'm sure they'll return with a smug, condescending air and a quip about how the critics know nothing and are conspiring to gull the masses.

look at their sales since they opened. unless this takes a major jump or they build a major advance off these reviews this thing will get slaughtered in the winter.
Your post makes zero sense, After Eight. So by your logic, now the critics (who you have reviled from review to review as being payed to virtually indoctrinate or brainwash the public to think one way or another about a show) are "right" because they agree with you? And everyone who wasn't wild about the show is wrong and should eat crow...? But when the critics don't agree with you, then they're all hacks, idiots, and it's all part of some big underground theater conspiracy plot...?
And everyone who saw an early preview and posted about it shared their OPINION. Which is neither right, nor wrong. Get over yourself.
Why am I even bothering? I'm sure he's "ignored" me, along with 1/2 of the posters on here.
Can After Eight just be blocked from this board...? It's not even a matter of putting him on my ignore list anymore. I'm not sure how his posts are any different from the countless trolls that are instantly blocked from BWW. Ugh.
Anyway, I'm excited to see this on Tuesday.

PlayitAgain, they just opened TONIGHT. What sales are you talking about? Previews? Which are always pretty low.
I disagree with the critics, and I wasn't a fan of Mays or the show, but still hope it finds an audience. It's a well-done show, if not entirely new or original and the "voice overs" really killed it.
I disagree with playitagain. I feel it is a show which will have very good word of mouth by the public. It may not be around for several years but like The Drowsy Chaperone, it might hang around long enough to make money and be there for the
Tony Awards.
