Attended the final preview tonight. For what it is, which is a world premiere of a new musical, I enjoyed more of it than I disliked. I'd say for me, about 60% of the score was successful while the other 40% just didn't work at all. I know every word to the film but haven't read the book since 1999 so I had forgotten so much, including the Tori character. When this show succeeds it works really beautifully but there's just so many great and dramatic moments that are shortchanged here in order to fit the staging and the structure of this specific piece.
It was already mentioned above so I can say that when Emily Skinner comes onstage and says that Daisy is dead, I actually stifled a laugh. What came to my head right away was Mary Todd's Nurse saying "Not like Miss Juliet. She killed herself today." They wanted to keep the entirety of Susannah's stay in the hospital set in the hospital, so no scenes outside of that were depicted and again, I understand it but it robs the characters and the audience of real emotional and devastating moments. Same with the "confrontation" with Lisa - it feels way too small and underdeveloped.
There really is some excellent stuff in here but it does need work and I hope it gets the chance to develop that. If I were to rate it out of 10 today I'd give it 6.5/10
