GIRL, INTERRUPTED (The Play With Music”) At The Public

Attended the final preview tonight. For what it is, which is a world premiere of a new musical, I enjoyed more of it than I disliked. I'd say for me, about 60% of the score was successful while the other 40% just didn't work at all. I know every word to the film but haven't read the book since 1999 so I had forgotten so much, including the Tori character. When this show succeeds it works really beautifully but there's just so many great and dramatic moments that are shortchanged here in order to fit the staging and the structure of this specific piece.

It was already mentioned above so I can say that when Emily Skinner comes onstage and says that Daisy is dead, I actually stifled a laugh. What came to my head right away was Mary Todd's Nurse saying "Not like Miss Juliet. She killed herself today." They wanted to keep the entirety of Susannah's stay in the hospital set in the hospital, so no scenes outside of that were depicted and again, I understand it but it robs the characters and the audience of real emotional and devastating moments. Same with the "confrontation" with Lisa - it feels way too small and underdeveloped.

There really is some excellent stuff in here but it does need work and I hope it gets the chance to develop that. If I were to rate it out of 10 today I'd give it 6.5/10

I saw it over the Memorial Day weekend and really enjoyed it! I did not read the book or see the movie before - perhaps that helped? Pretty captivated by the songs and characters and felt the 2 hours go by quickly. I was particularly impressed with Sally Shaw and her performance of Burn It Out.

Curious about the running time if anyone has seen the show lately. The Public website says 1:50 with no intermission. Is that accurate? I'm trying to figure out if I can make it back up to Port Authority for a 9:45 bus if I see a 7pm show.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

This play ties with Blackbird as the most depressing show I've ever seen, but Juliana Canfield and King Princess are both excellent. Give Me Fifteen and the final song were my favorite parts of Aimee's score
