Posted: 4/25/10 at 11:05pmAt least it's closing with a solid cast that does the show justice. Really love this show and I'm glad it had a life past the OBC!

Posted: 4/25/10 at 11:11pmSould I try to catch the show before it closes? I think that I might not like it being that the show is about parents talking about there children and me being a teenager myself. So I have a feeling that I won't relate.

Parents talking about their children is merely the setup. Chaos and craziness ensue as they all implode and explode. If anything, see it for Janet McTeer's brilliant performance.

Seeing it on Sunday. We're getting the regional premiere in Seattle in October but I'm excited about seeing this cast. I've heard nothing but raves.
Rmusic, have your parent ever had to argue with other parents about an issue/fight you had with another kid? I'm sure you can related to it from that point of view.

Posted: 4/26/10 at 7:35amI'm 15 and I loved the show. Doesn't matter if you were a parent or child. I'm sure I would like it much more if I was older but I still enjoyed it. Also I hate shows about kids.

Posted: 4/26/10 at 11:03amTo be perfectly honest, I think the play itself is mediocre at best. That being said, the cast members are giving fantastic performances, with the brilliant Janet McTeer at the helm. Go.

Posted: 4/26/10 at 11:09amAgreed that the play itself is incredibly thin, and really just okay, it's the cast that has always given it value.

Posted: 4/26/10 at 11:15amI agree it's hardly a great play, or rather, it's hardly an ambitious play. It's a good comedy and as a comedy I think it works. It's a great vehicle for four great actors to just let loose. I loved Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden in their roles and would have loved to see Lucy Liu and Janet McTeer. I also would have loved to see who they would have gotten next (so sad Donna Murphy never got to play Annette as I thought she would have been perfect in the part).

It's had a great run and the current cast is fantastic. If you have the chance, go!
I wonder what will be getting the Jacobs.

With the right cast, the play has depth and a lot of weighty stuff to chew on. I know some people on here inexplicably prefer this new (admittedly very good) cast to the OBC, but Marcia Gay Harden, Jeff Daniels and Hope Davis made it feel -- at least to me -- like a fully-realized, hilarious, deeply sad theatrical work that perhaps the text alone wouldn't support.
That said, I think "mediocre at best" and "thin" is being really overly harsh -- there's a lot of substantive things said about relationships and social parameters within the play, they're just drawn out of a simple/straight-forward premise. It's still absolutely worth seeing with this cast -- Daniels is phenomenal and McTeer is very good.

Now THAT sounds fantastic.
I haven't seen it since the OBC and I thought they were just perfect. Debating whether I should go back.

The reason that I prefer this current cast to the original is that I thought they brought out a depth in the play I hadn't noticed the first time around. Like many, when I first saw it I enjoyed it, but thought it light and somewhat superficial.
Second time around, it's still no masterpiece, but the comedy had real teeth. This quartet has a chemistry that reveals something disturbingly nasty and dark underneath the laughs, a real sense that these were marriages in deep crisis and some of their problems were insoluble.

Agreed. GOC is in excellent shape and will go out with a solid cast. Liu and McTeer are fine (with the latter being exceptional) but, I was most impressed with Baker and Daniels. Both are effortless and darn near perfection in their respective roles.
