Seriously, her performance from Saturdays show is seared in my brain. I havent been able to get it out of my head and I'm thinking it might just be the best performance I've ever seen on any stage and yes, this revelation deserves it's own thread.

Posted: 8/11/10 at 8:15pmYou didn't see Carol Channing in HELLO, DOLLY! I was there on Opening Night (Jan 16, 1964) and the performance remains as fresh in my memory as if it were yesterday.

Posted: 8/11/10 at 8:34pmI feel like I need to see her performance again, but I feel pretty much the same way, Jordan. Her face during "Make Up Your Mind/Catch Me I'm Falling" was devastating and I can't get it out of my head.

Posted: 8/11/10 at 8:54pmI'm still thinking about her performance two weeks later. Seriously, Alice who???

Wait, I'm confused, was Carol Channing in Next to Normal? What's she doing in this thread if not?

i agree. i saw her about 3 weeks ago now and I still get chills thinking about it. her performance was so gutwrenching and awe inspiring. i left heartbroken in the best possible way.
speaking of chills/n2n. I just heard Kyle Dean's new high note in I'm Alive. WOOOOWWWWW!

Posted: 8/12/10 at 12:30amJust listened to Kyle's note. He really sounds fantastic. Marin also sounds even better now that they lowered the keys. I really wouldn't say "Alice Who". Both play the roles very different and we should respect how both do it.

I think that's a completely fair review. I ran into a friend right after the show when I saw it and while I raved on and on about how great Marin and Jason were, I also said "They need more time to dig into the meat of the piece." And that's exactly what Brantley is saying.
Regardless, Marin has gone in a completely different direction with Diana that is truly astounding. She says she has been dealing with her mental disorders for 16 years and it shows in Marin's Diana. Once, the manic part of the manic depression may have been frenetic and intense, but it has turned to weariness and fatigue. It really adds an interesting dimension to the piece that I missed before, that feeling that the family is truly on their last leg.
I can't wait to get back and see this cast again.

Why does Brantley always feel the need to re-review a past performance/production in a review of someone/something else?
And more importantly, why do the editors at The New York Times let him get away with it?

Posted: 8/13/10 at 5:52pmMan, I want to see this so bad!
#21Get Out Of my Head Marin Mazzie!!!
Posted: 8/13/10 at 11:12pmD2 that is EXACTLY what i was thinking! As I said on another thread, he spends almost no time on the other cast members, especially Kyle Dean Massey and Meghann Fahy. Besides, isnt his job to be objective? How Alice chose to play the role is irrelevant to how Marin Mazzie chooses to.
#22Get Out Of my Head Marin Mazzie!!!
Posted: 8/13/10 at 11:27pmBrantley barely mentioned Tveit in his original review, so only giving a mention to Massey was not unexpected. Damiano got a few lines, but he really liked her. It sounds as if he didn't particularly enjoy Fahy (who I think is brilliant), and just chose not to discuss her much.
#23Get Out Of my Head Marin Mazzie!!!
Posted: 8/13/10 at 11:42pmAs discussed in the official review thread - how are critics asked to re-review a production specifically because of the new cast supposed to do that without comparing them to the predecessors?

Just saw the show again tonight. I saw Alice twice, Jessica once, and now Marin. While Alice owns the role, Marin knocked it out of the park. I don't know how she does that more than once a week, let alone twice in one day. Okay, so vocally I felt she didn't always succeed, but she left everything she had in her on that stage. Colorthehours nailed it perfectly where Alice played up the manic side, Marin's Diana had gone all the way to free fall.
Jason is really a fabulous Dan. I had my doubts, but he was sensational.
Megahn is a terrific Natalie. I think I may like her more than Jennifer.
Kyle is great. Don't always care for his voice, but he does a fine in a role that is difficult to really, ahem, bring to life.
