The Buffalo tickets are no longer on sale This makes me sad

To be honest, I could see why this flopped before it opened. Though some areas might have been easy to play to, this is an intimate show that could be a very hard sell for larger theatres and one night stands, even with somewhat recognizable names.
The Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ has a seating capacity of 1543, which is roughly the equivalent of three full performances in the show’s original Broadway home.
It’s sad though

Posted: 9/19/19 at 8:59pmThe dates in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Columbus are grossly undersold. It’s a bummer but I think they over estimated the appeal this would have.

Posted: 9/20/19 at 12:25amThey were booked in a theatre in Buffalo that seat 610 and they had almost sold out 6 performances. I wish they planned the stops better.

Posted: 9/20/19 at 12:39amShould have done smaller theaters in big cities, and extended if the demand was there. Sucks that this is cancelled, I don’t care for Xanadu as a whole but was really interested in this

Wouldn't you just ask your friend what is going on and then tell us all?

You can't extend on a tour - it's all planned in advance. You can add additional dates to the city by coming back the next season.

I adored the Broadway production, and thought the casting of Jinkx and Ginger was inspired.
However, the choice to cut half the cast of an already small scale show is baffling to me. Couple that with booking a mostly forgotten show from 10 years ago with no recognizable names to even the theater community, and booking houses that would absolutely eat a 5 person production. This was a recipe for disaster.

This show was never a huge cast show to begin with... Was there really a need to whittle it down?!?! Weird!"
What’s weird about it? A smaller cast, with the band doubling is hugely cheaper to tour.

I completely agree with you. They planned poorly. This would have sold well in small theatres in large markets. They botched this. In Buffalo we had six nights almost completely sold in a 600 seat theatre. That’s about the Max size for this show playing well. I think the Hayes where it ran on Broadway holds 800. Xanadu relies on audiences being able to see the faces for the comedy. It’s a show for expressive actors who can improv. It’s a hoot when done well. The casting absolutely inspired. Jinkx and Minj would have killed. This would never work in conventional theatres.
Also I think audience fatigue is setting in with the drag stars. They tour non-stop, always have their hands out to fans for these exclusive meet and great and VIP tickets and you have to pay to meet them at drag con.

Drag Race is popular, but people have short memories. Those two aren't marquee names and they've been off TV long enough for the kids to have basically forgotten them.
To remain relevant, you've got to have relentless social media drive... And neither of them are doing it quite like some of the more long-term popular contestants.

Posted: 9/20/19 at 3:45pmJinx’s show did well off-Broadway but against that was a cabaret space. With Peppermint in Head Over Heels, I think people aren’t exactly dying to see these queens act & sing outside of a night club setting.

From the production’s Twitter account, retweeted by both Jinx and Ginger:
“Though disappointed we will not be able to share this production across the country now, we remain in awe of the talents of @TheGingerMinj, @JinkxMonsoon and the entire @XanaduTheTour company. We can’t wait for you to see these two queens in this production soon. #Xanadu2020”

Posted: 9/22/19 at 4:34pmI’m sure the run-through was for the actors so they could at least do the show once for some family and friends before they pack up for good. “Nerds” did one after the same thing happened. Try and get some small semblance of closure since it happened so suddenly and they’d put all that work in already. This has happened too many times recently; producers need to get their act together before they mess with people’s lives and careers like this.

The Hayes actually holds fewer than the theatre in Buffalo at 597. And I agree with the latter point that Drag Race tour fatigue is setting in, especially on the larger markets. Several queens are doing or just wrapped solo tours (Bianca, Trixie, Katya, Jinkx and Dela's Christmas tour, Bob and Monet's podcast) and then the group tours are non-stop (Haters Roast, Christmas Queens, Werq the World). Add in large events (2 Drag Cons) and residencies (Las Vegas, Provincetown, even the Laurie Beechman), and I can understand this argument being a decent part of the equation.
