There's a novel of the same title -- is it based on that?

Has anyone been watching this? I just started yesterday, and have watched the first two episodes, and have to say, it's one of the best things I've seen in a while. The way they move from jail to the past and the story-telling is so beautiful that it completely draws you in, and before you know it, the 50-minute episode is over.
Highly recommend it for anyone trying to pick up a new show.
I like it a lot. It's definitely reminiscent of Kohan's last venture, WEEDS. Taylor Schilling is fantastic.
I've been watching it too. I love it. Only on episode 6 though.

Uzo is wonderful, the show is great, and the way it tells a trans woman's story is pretty groundbreaking.
Just realized that veteran Broadway actress, Annie Golden, who most recently understudied Jackie Hoffman and Mary Testa in Xanadu is also in this show and plays Red's mute assistant!!
**SPOILER***
Shows off her Broadway chops in one episode.

Watched about 5 episodes thus far and it is indeed a wonderful show.
I got through the first three last night. Kate Mulgrew is spectacular...but so is everyone on the show. Just stellar.

I have four episodes left. So glad I took a friend's advice and started watching.
So much theatre talent on here, Uzo Aduba, Annie Golden, Pablo Schreiber, Elizabeth Rodriguez, etc, its really exciting.
Adrienne Warren is also featured in a later episode.
The show is outstanding! As much as I tried to space it out, I finished it in about 4 days.

I am hooked, great cast. great writing and engaging stories.
I binged on the series and watched it all in a day and a half.
Aduba is such a highlight. It's easily the best show not on TV right now.
Isn't that also original broadway Mrs Potts, Beth Fowler, as the Nun?
This is a fantastic show. Excellent writing, wonderful performances- and it's awesome seeing a diverse female ensemble not made up to look "gorgeous."

I would watch this program, but one of its actors, Jason Biggs, is a sexist, egotistical, lying hypocritical bigot.

Sometimes you have to separate the artist from the art...and in this case, Jason Biggs is just an actor, not the creator of the show, he's just regurgitating lines, not spreading ideals.

I did that with Christian Bale when I saw 'The Fighter' and 'The Dark Knight Rises' even though I was bothered by the fact that he flew into an angry tirade in 2008 and swore while accepting an award at the 2011 Golden Globes. I still appreciated the performance from the late George Carlin on 'Shinning Time Station' as a child, even though Ringo Starr was better, despite finding out he was a raunchy and controversial comedian in my later years.
But I have not enjoyed any project Jason Biggs has done. Plus, I just find him to be an unlikable person with little to no talent. If was a casting director and a role came down to either him or Pauly Shore I would have a tough time deciding which is the lesser of the two evils. I might even pick Pauly Shore over him because I at least enjoyed Shore in the 'Goofy' movies.

If you don't like people who "did unnecessary swearing" than this might not be the show for you.
Edit: Okay I understand now sorry

^ I've seen films and TV shows where characters swears. There was plenty of it during 'The Fighter'. I just did not think Bale needed to swear when accepting an award. I corrected my previous post for what I meant to say.

I have nearly finished the season and am addicted. I am so happy a show about prisoners on the level of Oz (though lighter and more comedic) is back on television.
I met Natasha Lyonne at two shows with Carole Kane this season and am excited she's working again.
