Wow, you are really ignorant. The VAST majority of Hollywood writers make nowhere near $80,000. Aside from that, they have the right to demand compensation for the use of their work via other media. I certainly don't want other people benefitting from my work without benefitting myself first. It is after my work. Same with writers. Those CEOs wouldn't be getting their millions of dollars without writers. And salary is all relative to a particular industry. If I wrote a movie that made Titanic-level money and all I got was $50,000 for my efforts, I certainly would be irritated that some CEO who only signed the budget check made millions more for nothing more than saying "yes."
Hmmmn, nope. As I said, I believe they should get profit from the internet since money is being made. I just said I am personally tired of the strike, and can't feel too bad for a bunch of people who make more $$$ then most families do complaining about not getting paid for something and refusing to work until they get more payment. That's all I'm saying. Most people work for companies who pay their employees less then the big wigs make. That's just life. I'm not sure how the big wigs of a TV studio are that much different then those at any corporation. And please don't tell me that most Hollywood writers don't make at least $80,000 a year. I know they do. Instead of standing around with picket signs I would suggest they all donate their time to a homeless shelter, or help needy kids. Then maybe they won't feel so bad about not making a little more money. If not for people like me who watch movies and TV then the writers wouldn't be needed anyways. So I dont appreciate the "oh boo hoo, you wont be able to watch your show" comments.

I was hoping to get to see it; for the first time ever, most of my favorite movies and TV shows of the year got nominations! I support the writers, but it's a shame.
FlyingMonkey....you're just not getting it. Maybe, you don't want to? Who knows?
You're hung up on the fact that a writer makes more than the average person. So what? Who cares? How does that change the fact that they only want what they are entitled to get? Their salary has nothing to do with it. Nothing.
You have choices. If you don't like listening or hearing about the strike, then turn the tv or radio off, walk out of the room, etc.

Instead of watching your TV shows, why not donate your time to a homeless shelter?
I think they should just air the show without big speeches or tributes. The actors can wing it.
"The WGA is just being stupid, as are the actors who are still supporting them."
Nice comment. And considering you don't work in the industry, maybe you should keep your pie hole shut.

Where DO you get your information from?
Capnhook--I do donate my time to homeless shelters. Plus, I work 50+ hours a week. And have other things I must do. I don't, however, have time to hold signs complaining about my pay for weeks on end like some people do. And how can these "poor writers" be "hurting" so much financially if they can afford to stop work as long as they have?

Like I said before........you just don't get it. Their salary has NOTHING to do with them striking.
They want money for internet broadcast because the big guys are making money in advertising on them. I do understand it. I think they should get a profit of the money. It's only fair. But I don't feel bad for them. They are making good money as it is, gimme a beak. And now they aren't working at all so they can't be doing that bad.
You know, maybe you should just stop while you're behind.
I think they should just air the show without big speeches or tributes. The actors can wing it.
the actors aren't going to be there. SAG made an announcement today that, in support of the WGA, the actors won't be crossing picket lines to go to the Globes. a show or movie isn't just about the actors; the writers aren't going to be leaving the lines and putting down their signs to go to an awards show, and the actors, in support of them, aren't going either.
"Just tired of people who are overpaid as it is (most of those on strike make more than a two income family does!) complaining that they want more."
We live in America and if people are paying to see something it really does not matter how much they are making. As far as I know we are a Capitalist nation. When millions of people are enjoying your art and you are not seeing all the money for it, it hurts. Writers work hard and clearly a show can't go on without them so they deserve what they ask for.
The writers may make good money in the first place, yes. I don't think anyone is saying the opposite. However, the big guys make SOOOO much more money off the writers' and actors' work. It's not a battle of one of them making no money and the other one making all the money, but it is a battle about an author's right to earn the just amount for his art and not be scammed out of money.
Let's also remember that there are WGA members that only have one successful project and that's basically what income they have.
As annoyed as I am that I won't be getting a decent award season (I looove my film/TV award shows) and that I'm not getting a new episode of my favorite TV shows in months, I respect and understand the writers' strike.
Actually, it seems quite a few people are saying the writers aren't making very much money. What a joke. The big wigs at most jobs make huge earning compared to the smaller wigs. Even by working at McdDonalds...selling fast food for a small wage you are helping the big wigs of McDonalds make billions! But that's life.

"The WGA is just being stupid, as are the actors who are still supporting them. I 100% supported them when the strike began, but not so much anymore. I feel they are being greedy, and in the end I wonder if they truly see that it's the fans of their shows that are "hurting", because no one will care when the strike is over about the shows they once watched."
I wasn't going to say anything, but the above statement made me mad.
I'm tired of the strike too, but you need to realize as do all of the producers in Hollywood that without the writers they would not have a show(unless it was a reality show). A producer or director might come up with the concept, but they don't write the actual script for the tv show or tv movie or movie, the writers do.
The writers should get a bigger profit on dvd sales and internet shows because they wrote them. All the producer does is finance it, the director directs it, the editor edits it, but without the writer, there would be NO script.
Well with that out of the way, I can say that FOX won't have to worry too much about competition for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Even most of the "reality" shows have writers of a sort. Maybe not American Idol, but things like Survivor and The Amazing Race do have writers on sfatt to help sculpt the "storylines" you see.

Its sucks that awards season is affected, but it sucks more that those writers are having to strike to get what they rightfully deserve

While I really, REALLY wanted to see Johnny Depp win his Globe for Sweeney Todd (okay, I'm partisan), I think the WGA has to take this opportunity to make its case. I'm guessing that even if they negotiate some kind of watered down compromise with a press conference and parties and a red carpet, most of the actors still won't show up and I think they should ALL stay home. There's no other way to get the studios to negotiate than ratings pain and loss of commercial revenue and it has to start somewhere.
Gonna suck when their shows get canned...

FlyingMonkey, you should know that the Screen Actors Guild contract is up in June. The actors are facing a lot of the same concerns that the writers are. They have to support one another now.
Yup....it's officially cancelled now. Just going to have a press conference to announce the winners.
I probably shouldn't even start posting in this thread. But what the heck...
I understand both sides of the debate. I do think that writers should be fairly imbursed for their talents. I understand that the actors want to support the writers. I mean, the actors want good material to work with.
HOWEVER, I do think that the strike is hurting an industry that is already overwhelmed with reality television. I mean, CBS runs out of episodes of Cold Case, so they pull some strangers into a house in LA and start another season of Big Brother.
There are so many choices for use of our free time. Personally, I shouldn't have to aggrevated over tv. I'd much rather pick up a book where the story continues until I decide to stop it. And I have been lately. There are only a few tv shows that I go out of my way to catch.
I do think it is a shame that the actors and movies that are being honored won't receive recognition and celebration of their achievements. I'm not sure what anyone is gaining by that...
This makes having a ton of DVD's worth it
If the oscars are cancelled also, it will be quite sometime before it is settled. As always, many innocent people will wind up as collateral damage because of this stoppage.
Many TV shows may not return as the actors may decide to move on to other projects. How long can some of these casts be held together with no end in sight?
