I would have to add Curtains to the list as well. Great show and sad that it flopped.

I always forget that Ragtime flopped twice...definitely a great score there too.
Correct me if I'm wrong. But, for some reason I always thought that Ragtime was one of those shows that was close to recouping. Yet, it didn't do so during its Broadway run but did during its tour.

No one said Broadway, just flop, so go crazy.
I love Jennie, and can't believe I forgot The Human Comedy! Amazing score.
Goldilocks is pretty amazing.
Destry, Drood and Take Me Along didn't make back their moneys? I thought they were all pretty successful, but admit I have not looked too hard to confirm that.
Metropolis! Duh!
Another great London flop score is Two Cities.
I don't think I've listened to Two Cities. Need to check that one out.
Mr Matt, get a life, then get a research book. Many of the shows on your list were big hits, such as "Destry Rides Again" which ran a season and a half, and Take Me Along, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn...
Don't you understand that back then, anything over 250 performances was considered a hit?
Destry - 472 perf
Do Re Mi - 400 perf
Take Me Along - 448 perf
In their time, these were all decent runs.
Even by today's standards, Drood and On tHe Twentieth Century had very respectable runs.
And they all had great scores.
My nomination is "Bravo Giovanni." Great score BIG bflop.
According to Suskin, Tree, Do Re Mi, and Destry closed in the red. Take, however, closed in the black.
Heathen! is a great obscure Broadway flop score.
Let's not forget Blitzstein's Regina and Juno.
I've always been extremely fond of Amour.
Two that I listen to alot:
Prettybelle
Canterbury Tales

I was posting in response to the thread title and the technical definition of a "flop", which is a musical which failed to recoup its investment. There is a thread listing financial flops based on the earnings listed in Variety. Maybe if you didn't have such a crappy attitude, you would have noticed this subject has been discussed ad infinitum on these boards and would have realized how I determined my list. If you don't personally agree with that definition of "flop", that has nothing to do with either my life or my research. It does however suggest your lack of perspective or objectivity which appears mostly to be clouded by your ego.
I could be wrong about Take Me Along. For some reason, I thought it was in Mandelbaum's Not Since Carrie, but I don't have a copy available in the office now for verification. There is also the issue that it really isn't a big deal and doesn't matter enough to warrant an immature personal attack.
Agreed. Take Me Along is not in Not Since... fyi.
Just thought of Magdalena. Beautiful score. We're so lucky to have the CBS recording.
Greenwillow also came up in the Suskin readings. =)
I Had a Ball.
Another we should be glad was recorded: THE GRASS HARP

Honestly, my two favorite scores were flops. Parade and Ragtime... You can't get much better than that!
I was JUST going to add The Grass Harp. Is it worth it to get the Varese reissue if one already has the Painted Smiles reissue?
Along these lines are two great early 1970s Broadway flop scores:
Angel
Shelter
There are some odd ones like those that mingled theater sounds with country, rock, or other popular sounds. One of my favorite things.
I wish both of these would find their way to legitimate issues!! I'm talking to you Kritzerland (Angel, maybe?) and Masterworks Broadway (Shelter).
Curtains
Ragtime
Seussical
13 and Tarzan (I know I'm in the minority, but I enjoyed some of the songs.)

I really dont know. I have the original LP, which I transferred to CD a few years back.

I don't know if it qualifies as a flop, since it was originally produced at the Vineyard (i.e. non-profit), but I find Goblin Market to be quite lovely. The score is haunting and perfect for the subject matter.
