Oh, I actually completely agree. I found the sound of the score to fit the theme and setting of the story incredibly well. But like you said it was, besides the few glowing moments, a little on the boring side.
But I'm excited to see what the composer comes up with next because I think he's really talented.

Since when is Ragtime a flop?

I can't believe no one's mentioned Meadowlark from THE BAKER'S WIFE yet (unless I just completely missed it).

Most of the wedding singer(dont know if it qualifies as a flop though)
Whistle down the wind-whistle down the wind

I don't quite get how Carrie is anything like Wicked. The music in Carrie (at least mother/daughter songs) is quite darker and more grandiose in scale, while Wicked tends to go for more of a pop sound.
Listen to the chord progression on "Satan loves a sinner..." and all those parts with that melody... don't you think it sounds like "No Good Deed" to you?
And I don't know why you like to consider WEDDING SINGER and SEUSSICAL flops. They lasted almost the whole year, and they got SOME good reviews. I like to call a flop a show that lasts less than 99, and gets little or no good reviews.
And RAGTIME is by no means a flop. It won Best Score that year.
And I forgot to mention THE GOODBYE GIRL. I knew there was some Marvin Hamlisch show I missed out on. So, my favorites are "Paula (An Improvised Love Song)," "An Elliot Garfield Grant," "Jump For Joy," and "How Can I Win"?
You're right -- every note in the score to SMILE stands out. It needs to be recorded again, this time with a REAL orchestra, not just the 3 keyboardists and drummer.

I honestly can't believe that High Fidelity has been mentioned so many times in this thread. The songs in that show were atrocious (especially the lyrics as one could tell just from the song titles).
Secondly, I agree that it took way too long for Meadowlark from The Baker's Wife to show up in this thread. That is the type of song I was expecting to see in this thread, not every single song from High Fidelity.
For me:
Chess: Nobody's Side
Merrily We Roll Along: Title song, Not a Day Goes By, Our Time and Old Friends
Since when is Ragtime a flop?
Since it closed on red and marked the end of Livent.
If you are mentioning "All American" - how could you not include "Once Upon A Time"
From "One Night Stand" - A Little Travelin Music Please, There Was A Time
LEGS DIAMOND - most of the score is wonderful
THE LIFE - "Use What You Got", "My Body", "The Oldest Profession", "The Hooker's Ball". etc;
is there life after high school? - ah-mazing music
WILDCAT - "Corduroy Road", "You've Come Home" & "Hey Look Me Over"
These are a few that popped into mind right away that haven't already been mentioned.
