Carrie in Carousel.
Well, in my opinion, she would have won.
I mean, a mediocre role won Lead Actress over a highly dramatic role.
^ They had to give WICKED one of the "big" awards.
Anyway, I still don't see how you can justify Glinda as supporting.
It's like saying Phyllis is supporting in FOLLIES. Not true.
Clara in The Light In The Piazza
Anita in West Side Story
Eulalie Shinn in The Music Man
Louise in Gypsy
Sarah in Ragtime
Mae Peterson in Bye Bye Birdie
Fastrada in Pippin
Joanne in Company
Little Red in Into the Woods
Little Sally - Urinetown
Amy in Company
Mrs. Meers in Millie
Mama Morton in Chicago
Yenta in Fiddler
Carla in Nine
The Drowsy Chaperone in The Drowsy Chaperone
I didn't see this mentioned (but I could've missed it) but Nickie in Sweet Charity is, IMO, the best role in the show. I'd so much rather be Nickie over Charity.
And I wouldn't really consider the Baker's Wife to be a supporting role.
I don't really wanna argue or anything because I could care less, but how can you call Clara in PIAZZA supporting? Can you not give any thought to Glinda being supporting?
Glinda can either be seen as weak leading role or a very strong supporting role.
And since is a thread on the greatest supporting roles, Glinda fits.
Have you seen Glinda played by someone who is not Chenoweth?
Chenoweth was leading because she is who she is, and she worked it like a leading actress should. However, when played by another actress with less star power, the role can be seen as supporting.
And, yes, I would bet anyone a lot of money on the Chenoweth winning over Anika Noni Rose.
I realized that all of my favorite/dream roles are supporting. Hm.
I saw Jennifer Laura Thompson in the role twice. And she made it anything but a featured role. She was excellent.

I don't see how Clara is a supporting role. It still is a great role, but Franca is more of a supporting role than Clara is.

Charlotte and Cordelia in FALSETTOS. Updated On: 6/19/07 at 10:33 AM
The Stepsisters in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella can steal the show.
Ado Annie in Oklahoma is a great supporting role, as is Meg Brockie in Brigadoon.
Gooch in Mame, Mamma in Bye, Bye Birdie, Carrie in Carousel, Rosie and Tanya in Mamma Mia.
Those are all great supporting roles.

I agree about the stepsisters. They were the single good part of our production of Cinderella.
Vera in Mame
Anita in West Side Story
Joanne in Company
Louise in Gypsy
Mamma Morton in Chicago
Carlotta in Follies
Nickie in Sweet Charity
Edith Bouvier Beal in Grey Gardens
Guys, let's not just start listing random supporting roles. I read a few from Seussical. I wouldn't call any role in that show a great role, though the score is good.
Bloody Mary in South Pacific
Anita in West Side Story
Louise in Gypsy
Vera Charles in Mame
Joanne in Company (Though she could be considered a lead. Stritch was nominated in leading actress, right?)
Carlotta in Follies
Mama Morton in Chicago
Cassie and Shelia in Chorus Line
Clara in Piazza (Though of course it could be a lead. It's written than way in the novella.)
Big Edith (Act II) in Grey Gardens
I consider The Baker's Wife to be the leading lady (with The Witch) in Into the Woods. Joanna Gleason was nominated (and won)for leading actress, right? Isn't it the lead then?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Petra from A Little Night Music. I've never seen an actual production, but "The Miller's Son" is such an amazing song!
I was debating whether or not to put down a role from Night Music, but it was going to be that of Charlotte. I didn't want my list to get too long though.
