First off, I have seen "Grey Gardens", but have only listened/that certain video site-d "Spring Awakening". That being said, I thought Grey Gardens was a really great show; Ebersole was priceless, and won a well-deserved Tony. Just listening to Spring Awakening (sorry if this offends anyone, but hey it will) makes me think of RENT. Not exactly, down-to-the-last-hair storyline or music-related, but it has a similar style.
And the music of SA didn't exactly thrill me either. So yes, long story short, GG was robbed.
GG deserved best book, IMO. (Score, too, but I was willing to sacrifice that one to the mediocre, oft-described as "innovative" SA. It's not that innovative-it does remind me of "Rent". We've been there, done that.)
I really am so happy for MLW and particularly Christine Ebersole right now, though. They both deserved their wins. (In featured actress in a musical, MLW had some competition from Ziemba and Orfeh. Both were serious competition.)

I am a HUGE SA fan, but I too was a little puzzled by the book award. Isn't it mainly just a translation from the original play? I expected GG to take book. And oh, I realy liked the set design, but I haven't seen Poppins, so maybe that was deserved.

spring awakening = dog crap.
Grey Gardens = masterpeice.
I saw them both in the same day.
at 2:00 I thought SA was some kind of joke and it made me loose brain cells, of which I have so few already.
then at 8:00 I was actually taken somewhere and moved.
Hey SA fans I have a question!!??
do the audience members (now that it is so popular) still laugh at its awkward moments? or do they pretend along with the teens in the house? cause when I saw it everyone laughed at the gay scene, and I thought it was a shame that the director would allow such a huge digression like that.
It wouldn't surprise me to find out that some of the folks who gave The Producers "more Tony awards than any show in history" are now wondering what the hell they were thinking that year.
I could see Grey Gardens having a quiet but long lasting life as an ideal vehicle for actresses of a certain age. Kathy Lee Gifford? Madonna? Patti Lupone? They all might one day bring something interesting to the role of Big/Little Edie.
I like SPRING AWAKENING, I would never want to see it again or anything, but I do support it and am glad it fared well.
But yes, GREY GARDENS definitely deserved book over SPRING AWAKENING, as well as maybe something like orchestrations.
I wouldn't say GREY GARDENS was robbed, but when SPRING gets 8 Tonys, and the musical with the next most awards gets 3...something is a little wrong, haha.
I was really rooting for Grey Gardens to win book and orchestrations along with costumes (very much deserved!), Christine and Mary Louise Wilson. I would have been very happy with those two other wins.

It just goes to show what We know.
I was as confident as anyone Grey Gardens was going to do well last night.
Spring Awakening stole its thunder to all our suprise, but the judges have spoken, it is done.
In the past I have disputed judgments by the voters and while I am not passionate about this will say it is not supriseing.

I like Grey Garden but come one, evenryone knew Spring Awakening was going to win.
While I do agree that Grey Gardens deserved many of the awards it didn't recieve, after the first 30 minutes it was painfully obvious that Spring Awakening was going to sweep.
Because I am home for the summer I watched the telecast with my mom and a few friends. My mother, who is a very open minded person, saw the Spring Awakening performance and turned to me and asked, "That is the crap that has been stealing all of the awards?!" I just nodded my head.
Grey Gardens was robbed in every sense that it could be. After seeing Grey Gardens I left the theatre completely moved and in love with the entire show. Spring Awakening just gave me a headache and wanting my money back.
Spring Awakening winning for choreography and book is a complete JOKE! Apparently just having some hand movements and jumping around onstage along with for the most part just copying from a script of the play is deserving of a Tony. Ok...yeah...whatever.
If Spring Awakening is the future of Broadway as someone stated...I am truly scared.
BUT Spring Awakening DIDN'T sweep lol. It lost 3 awards. So we can't say it made a sweep.

Mary Louise Wilson is 75 and deserved the Tony, if for not giving a great performance, which I think she did, but also for life achievement. I think Grey Gardens is a very important musical. The script and score are so brilliant, because it's such an odd show, but so brilliantly conceived. I wish I cared about Spring Awakening, but frankly, it simply doesn't interest me. I've been through horny adolescence and don't need to relive it.

I agree completely. I also want to add that GG has touched my life profoundly and changed it. It is a rare thing to have a musical do that-it takes you on a journey of self-exploration. Very powerful stuff.
And Christine Ebersole deserved her award as much as Mary Louise Wilson-she gave Edith a voice and Edie a soul. Amazing performance. Can't wait to see it again.
Do wish it'd gotten more recognition, particularly because I failed to connect with SA in much the same way as you, piercemn.
I think Grey Gardens deserved Best Book, definitely. The first act is kind of hated on but I heavily disagree with that take, it has a lot of fantastic dialogue, a believable setup for the characters ending up how they did and some excellent music. Seeing precisely how they ended up the way they did is part of the mystery IMO. There's sort of an overly stylized aspect to the score but it's very well constructed and serves the plot well. I hope they revive it with Kristin Chenoweth in the role of Big Edie/Little Edie!
Normally I find random bumping of 10+ year-old threads odd...but, with the time we’re living in and the fact that Grey Gardens was truly robbed and underrated, I have no choice but to wholeheartedly agree.
We still need to see a better performance in a Broadway musical than Christine Ebersole's in Grey Gardens
It’s a shame the show closed with Ebersole. I would have loved to see some other ladies take on the starring roles.
I’m more disappointed that the announced West End production never materialized.
'Grey Gardens' deserved best score and orchestrations, in addition to Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson.
I think Spring Awakening deserved both music awards although Gardens has incredible lyrics.

Agree with this thread. Grey Gardens was definitely robbed.
