Ok random question about Patti's singing....Does she belt the C at the end of "Some People"? I have never heard a Rose do that before, and I was wondering if she does it. Just curious.

Okay, granted I came to this thread late but I just read that they cut the "Small World" Reprise and the "rape" scene. Thats so disappointing! I adored both scenes!
Alas, any GYPSY is better than no GYPSY at all!
Also, it seems like so many people are loving this production of Gypsy so I'd like to ask when you all became aware of Gypsy and what your first exposure to it was.
I watched Bernadette's performance on Youtube, loved the song, and picked up the OBCR. Loved it the first time I listened to it.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
I go to a performing arts school, and one time when my classmates and I all had to perform in front of one another, my friend sang Some People. I picked up Lansbury's recording (and later Merman and Daly's).
And this past year my friend and I did the final scene in the dressing room for our drama final. My love only grew with that.
Gotta love Gypsy!

Now I saw this show last night and was in awe. I definately wanted to see Patti in the role of mama, but as there has been talk on the is board about wanting it to transfer to Broadway... I was like "Do we really need another revival of gypsy though." I've Changed My mind GET THEE TO BROADWAY PLEASE!!!!!! This was the most thoroughly enjoyable production of Gypsy I've seen. Patti You deserve it!
Could someone give me an idea of how the pit seats would be for the production. Are they really good or should I look for seats a bit further back? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
frogs, I was in the front row (I had no choice, the dress rehearsal seats were assigned by the b.o.). As thrilling as it was to have Patti sing to me a couple of times, I'm glad that when I go again I'll have a house seat. I wouldn't recommend being that close.
Have I ever shown you my Shattered Dreams box? It's in my Disappointment Closet. - Marge Simpson
Yes, except for the Kabuki or Bunraku Lamb puppeteer and the stuffed Chowsie and the bitchy way he directed June in the Mama Was Married scene and song. But that's Arthur--he makes his women bitchy and nasty, just like he is.
But Patti was perfect and Laura Benanti and Boyd Gaines stood up to her. Patti was even better than she was in Ravinia.
Her Some People was stronger, her Small World was sweeter, her Everything's Coming Up Roses more horrifying, her Together more fun and her Rose's Turn more galvanic. She wasn't acting Rose. She WAS Rose. And she will own that role for as long as any of us today are still alive.
I'm glad he cut the rape scene--rape is not as funny as it once must have been in 1959--and I didn't miss the Small World reprise at all. It's a vestige of a second-act ballad that Sondheim and Styne wrote for Merman and cut before rehearsals. Everyone agreed the moment didn't need to stop for a number, but they wanted to give Merman a musical coda to her relationship with Herbie, so they put in that unnecessary reprise. It's better with it gone.
I don't feel the same about the "Hold your hats" cut in Rose's Turn. Sure, it streamlines the number, but I prefer my Rose's Turn uncut.
All in all, as close to a perfect musical as any of us will experience in our lifetimes.
I was there tonight also and loved every minute of it. I don't really know what to say except that Laura Benanti, Patti LuPone, and Boyd Gaines are giving some of the most intense performances I have ever witnessed on stage. All three of them were the characters and even a usual give away number like "Together" was one of the best numbers in the whole show. Laura Benanti's journey was incredible and I actually cried during "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Rose's Turn." Pure theater magic. Oh, the strippers were great.
Oops, I forgot to mention the Overture. Wow, they new exactly what to highlight and that trumpet or horn (sorry I forget which instrument it is) blew the roof of the place. I think we (the audience) applauded three times during the overture.
