Tickets have been on sale since December. Why would anyone on this board wait until opening night to buy, anyway? If anyone knows about how these price hikes happen, we do.

There's more discussion in this thread of the prices than the actual reviews, so I'll chime in Do these reviews really merit the increase? There are a lot of pull quotes but they weren't raves across the board, even the Times is not an unqualified rave at all. I'd be pretty disappointed if I paid close to $300 dollars for a show with basically 1 set and a chorus of 5, Luckily I paid 70 bucks for an orchestra seat at TKTS.

HADESTOWN at the Sunday 1pm show was easily the highpoint of our Easter weekend (and that includes a pretty swell Easter Bonnet Parade on 5th Avenue where you may have spotted us in white suits with Vessels on our fedoras).

The minute the show started, that cast of 13 and their 6-member onstage band wove the most beautiful spell that kept us floating through 2 1/2 hours of musical theater bliss. The music making was gorgeous, the design all served the story with perfect economy, and the story was equal parts thrilling and heartbreaking. We're not ashamed to say we were each wiping away tears all through Act II.

I'll tell you right now, we were all totally Team Reeve-- loved his voice, loved his otherworldliness, loved his lost-boy vibe that made you root for him through two full acts. And finally here was a show where the main character struggles to find his "one song" and when he succeeds in Act II, it's actually the most lovely song in an altogether lovely score. Eva, Andre, Patrick, they all owned their roles and sounded gorgeous. I was NOT a fan of Amber Gray in THE GREAT COMET (frankly not a fan of that show whatsoever), but here she perfectly embodied the various shades of Persephone. Yummy.

Did I have quibbles? Just a couple. The lyrics are beautiful throughout, sure, but when the whole show is a series of rhymed couplets, but can't they come up with just ONE true rhyme in that sea of false rhymes? Are they just trolling us now? And I know the minions sing and sing about a wall in Hades, but all the mimed digging did not equate to building a wall. I really expected some brilliant coup de theater for our ensemble to shatter the wall to pieces when they escape Hades. Instead all I got was 10 more rotations of the damn turntable donuts that had quite worn out their welcome by then. (And yes, we were watching from 4th row mezzanine.)

But yay, Hadestown! Finally a great new musical that will enter the pantheon of musical theater classics that they'll still be reviving a hundred years from now.

No, it is definitely not overhyped! The show was spectacular, and almost all the reviews thought so as well. After Tony Nominations come out, I suspect ticket prices will go up. I'm predicting over 10 nominations, and it will definitely be nominated for Best Musical.
