HAIR will play the Hirschfeld

If I remember right, the Hirschfeld is one of the larger theaters - 1500 ish?
So I'm curious if people think Hair can draw that size of a crowd to make it pay off to be in one of the most beloved theaters on Bway?

This aint gonna last more than a few months on Broadway at $120 a pop!
The last major London production ran just 2 months in 1993 and nearly got one of London's oldest and most famous theatres demolished. And that in a city where the original production (Shaftesbury Theatre now home to 'Hairspray') in the late 60s ran longer than the original Broadway run did!!!

What they need is a new logo. If they put that mohawk skull up on the Hirschfeld marquee I'm going to cry.

Posted: 11/5/08 at 5:21pmwow that was fast. i hope they can get most of the acclaimed cast from the Central Park production to come back. They will surely rock the Hirschfeld.

Everyone is so freaking negative. The show announced it was opening today and everyone's already predicting it'll last "a few months."
It's a great production of a show that is timely and important NOW. Give it a chance.
And they'll almost certainly design a new show logo.

Posted: 11/5/08 at 5:57pmnot meaning to thread jack but whoever said nicolette hart is playing maureen on the tour that makes me really happy. She was awsome when I saw it here last year. That being said I hope its Groff and not Hanke. Groff needs another show on bway.

Groff will opening Off B'way in the next week or two. (A Prayer for My Enemy.)
Only a few people have "cursed" it to a short run, not everyone. Here's my thought: I loved it in the Park this summer...and I wasn't a huge Hair fan. That being said, I'm still not sure if it will pull in a PAYING audience. But I hope it does. I know I'LL be seeing it early in the run: regardless of who is playing Claude.

Posted: 11/5/08 at 11:08pmOkay, I'm not one to just jump on the bandwagon of naysayers, but I do think the Hirschfeld is too big for the production. "Hair" feels like more of an intimate show, and a big venue like that does not seem to fit properly, IMHO.

I did not see Hanke or Groff in the show but I really want it to be Hanke. He was great in Rent and I would love to see him get a chance to star in another show.

You liked her Maureen, if she was casted and I was seeing her I would probably step out for the time that she is onstage. I could not stand her Maureen. I wish is was Eden who was cast but she is doing Wicked.
Speaking of Eden... what do you think she would be like as Sheila? Also would she be done with Wicked in time?

Posted: 11/6/08 at 9:27amI thought it was a given that the part of Claude would be offered to Mr Groff. I would love to see the part given to Mr Hanke, especially if Mr Swenson is cast as Berger. Their connection in the show as the 2 leads was such a part of what made the whole show so powerful. I can't compare though because I never saw Groff as CLaude (saw it 3 times with Hanke).

I too think that the Hirschfeld is too big of a house for this production. I just don't think they are going to have the audience to fill it consistantly.
It's one thing to have a "sold out" run at the park when you have season subscribers and the rest of the tickets are given away for free. You are guaranteed an audience because people love free sh*#. Now, ask people to pay $125 a ticket and see how many show up.

While I am sad to see "Tale of Two Cities" go, if I was to pick something to take it's place at the Hirschfeld, it would certainly be "Hair." Can't wait to see it...never got a chance to see at Central Park but "Hair" is one of my favorite shows of all time. Also, hoping for Hanke to get the role of Claude (just because I am a fan of his, wish I could base my opinion off of seeing both Hanke and Groff's performances as Claude). But then again, Groff will probably sell more seats. He has developed quite the following since taking his pants off in "Spring Awakening."

'He has developed quite the following since taking his pants off in "Spring Awakening."'
He's also quite talented.
I do want to clarify that I do want this production to succeed. I just think it would have a better shot in a smaller house.

Posted: 11/6/08 at 10:17amI agree that the Hirschfeld is too large...it will be hard to give the impression of a sold out hit. But yes, to answer someone's earlier question, their aisles are pretty wide.

Drunk Chita Rivera: No one is ever "casted" in a show...they are simply "cast."
While I do feel like the Al Hirschfeld is way too big of a house to hold this production, I do hope it is successful. I would LOVE for Christopher Hanke to finally have something solid, but Jonathan Groff would definitely sell more seats...and with our economy the way it is and the effects it has had on our industry...you can't help, but expect Groff to get the offer above Hanke.

God, not the whole "why not the circle in the squaree??" question again.
Brian Idol, this has been discussed to death on here- it would not be economically feasible to put it in the Circle. Although seemingly a good fit, and while I wish it could go there, it is not possible. For a show with a huge of a cast as this, the Circle in the Square, or any other small, "intimate" theatre, would not sustain the show for long. The salaries for the actors and crew alone would be too great for a small theatre, even sold out, to support, let alone the weekly running cost.
edit: But I do wish this production luck, and cannot wait for it!

Posted: 11/6/08 at 5:04pmIsn't the Delacorte pretty big? I mean, it's practically a small stadium. I'm not seeing how the Hirschfeld being a larger theatre too is really an issue.

While I'm EXTREMELY Happy that hair is going into the Hirschfeld (and that it'll become my new 2nd home).
I'm a bit scared for it.
I mean Tickets are usually around $100+ each. I hope people buy enough tickets to keep it running for a while. One of the big reason why the production at the park extended so many times was because the tickets were FREE.
I really hope this show stays open for a long time.
I also (for my sake) hope that they have either Cheap Mezz or a rush policy bc Even tho I only saw it twice in the park I wish I could of seen it a bunch more times. With this show I feel like it's going to be my new favorite show.

Posted: 11/6/08 at 10:29pmI'm so glad this show is coming to Broadway. I think it will be a real hit and help get the state of current theatre (in relation to the economy) back up again. I played this show over the summer for 2 weeks down in Florida. Great music...great show...I hope there's a great cast!

Why the Hirschfeld, and NOT the Shubert?
They're both empty, and the Shubert is widely regarded as the most desirable theatre on Broadway. PLUS, the Public has a "Chorus Line" relationship with the Public.
I'm just curious. Ideas?
