Most of the theatres I see here in NYC do make it clear which version you're seeing (sing a long vs. regular), but what confused me is all the paper and internet things only say "Hairspray" and then you get to the theatre and it says "Hairspray 2". Took me a minute to figure that one out...at first I thought THAT was the sing along. LOL.

LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!
Did you pre-record the music twice? On the soundtrack during YCSTB, it sounds as if Amanda and Elijah say "I'll call the NAACP" but in the movie it sounds as if they say "WE'LL call the NAACP." So I was just curious about that....
Marc, how did you film some of the scenes in "I Can Hear the Bells" like where Tracy is singing while eating the teacher's food and having the thermometer in her mouth? How did you manage to make the music still "come out" if you know what I mean? Did you re-record those parts. That also occurs in "Without Love" where Seaweed is holding a smile and trying to talk to Penny with the cop surrounding them.
Those little 'fixes', like those moments when Tracy is singing with stuff in her mouth, are re-recorded after filming. This is called 'looping'. She films it as recorded on the playback, then they 'fix' this audio stuff afterwards. Alot of 'tweaking' is done to the recording, like adding sound effects (feet stomping on "Nicest Kids in Town", car noises in the background of "Good Morning Baltimore", etc.) during post production.
The playback recording they record prior to filming is simply done as a 'guide' for filming purposes. Things get 'fixed' afterwards, in regards to audio sections, etc.
Another difference is the way Velma sings the word "souffles" in Miss Baltimore Crabs. She sings it up an octave on the soundtrack album, but in the actual film she doesn't.

How did you like Weston's production of Hairspray? I want to see it, but I haven't heard anything about it- no reviews or anything.

I just read Hairspray earned the Ensemble Award from the Hollywood Film Festival.
I am awaiting an official press release in order to post it on the blog, but Congratulations! Well deserved.

Hey Marc! First off, congrats on a VERY sucessful film. I LOVE it. Sorry if my question has already been asked, but i don't have 3 hours to go through the 17 page thread. haha. Anyway, I was wondering if there is any chance that the any of the new songs will be included when MTI releases the rights for the show for schools and community theatres? Will there be any option for buying seperate rights and putting them into the show (ie Grease)? And any word on when the rights will eb released? I know MTI will let you sign up to be on a waiting list, but i'm not sure of the date, or even if there's been one set for that matter. Thanks!!!
Marc, I've seen the movie 4 times (including the sing-along version last night). Is it my eyes, or does Penny's skin coloring darken as the movie unfolds? By the time she sings YCSTB, it looks like she's spent hours in a tanning booth.
Loved the movie! You will probably be nominated for an Oscar for "Come So Far (Got So Far to Go)". Amazing song!
P.S. I saw you in the audience of Reprise! Broadway Babies at the Ford Ampitheater. Did you enjoy it?
My question is ... Besides Shayna, Harvey and Marissa, where any other members of the original broadway cast members (E.G. Kerry Butler, Matthew Morrison etc) involved in the movie...where they involved in the background vocals to any of the songs on the soundtrack???
Clark Thorell, Jenn Gambatese, and Shoshanna Bean, to name a few, sang backup.

The ensemble that features Original Broadway cast members and all. Where are they singing? Is it just the background of songs like YOU CAN'T STOP THE BEAT or do some of them cover the singing for THE NICEST KIDS IN TOWN?
"Anybody that goes to the theater, I think we’re all misfits, so we ended up on stage or in the audience.” --- Patti LuPone.
Not to be rude, but this has been covered endlessly (even on this thread).
"Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" was never included in the script therefore it was never filmed. It will not be on the DVD as it's not a deleted scene -- again, it was never filmed. The reasons for it not being included is covered extensively on this thread.
Due to the popularity of the song, it was recorded for the film soundtrack by the 3 Tracy's of HAIRSPRAY: Ricki Lake, Marissa Jaret Winokur and Nikki Blonsky. This version of the song appears in the film's end credits.
I'm with Huey's Pop, haha Amanda Bynes was many shades darker than anyone in that film, and as the movie moved on, she started getting even tanner. I just remember when she was in Maybelle's record shop I think the 2nd time, maybe it was just me, but I was like "Whooa...", haha :) Haha, not that being tan is a bad thing, Amanda looks gorgeous in the film. But yeah...very tan.

What exactly does it mean to be a Baltimore "Crabs?"
I'm not really qualified to answer this, but I'll take a guess.
B2488, lots of small towns have pageants that name the winner after something the town is known for. Miss Georgia Peach, Miss Wyoming Cheddar. I'm sure the writers picked Crabs because A) Maryland is well-known for its crabs and B) the sexual connotation.

Hey Marc, Not a question but I would just to say you did a fantastic job on "Hairspray" and I hope you'll do the exact same on "Ugly Betty" (if there is truth to the report, like madbrian asked).
Haha, if there's truth, make sure the characters Amanda & Marc get a song
Happy 5th anniversery Marc! I loved the wig and those were the best orchestrations I have ever heard at the musical.

Marc- I think that is really great of you for coming here and answering our questions! I think you are one of the BEST people on Earth!! When I was 12 I saw the Broadway version and I totally fell in love with theatre and Hairspray in general. My parents took me to like 3 Broadways a week so I was already really into theatre. I already really wanted to be an actress, well, that or a District Attorney. Anyway I wanted Hollywood not New York. So I was interested in performing but....I don't know, Hairspray just kind of closed the deal for me. I saw it with my choir at school and there was a big storm as we left the theatre and so the next day the power was out in the school and my mom was at work so all day I played the soundtrack on my computer and danced around. In about an hour I learned all the words to every song by heart. Let me wrap this up, for a long time Hairspray was my life. It still is in a way because now I am definiatly going to be an actress. But before that, I want to be a performer. I am only thirteen so that was just a year ago but in 1 year I will be in High School and Hairspray gave me the courage to be positive that I am definiatly joining the drama club. Oh yeah, I guess I forgot to say, in all my blabbering, that I get stage fright. Thank you for being such an inspiration and writing the lyrics that helps me so much. Every day. Thank you. -Katherine Brooks
Marc, I saw the film for the second time last night, and I loved it as much as the first. I enjoyed John Travolta even more this viewing. I wasn't so concerned with whether or not I was going to like him, how was he going to compare with Harvey, etc. He does a great job.
