There's a moment in New Girl In Town where the Dynamites scream:"Look out Look Out Look out", ala Little Shop...is this a conscious nod to that show?
no, we are both obviously paying tribute to LEADER OF THE PACK, where the girls scream that as the anti-hero of the song has his motorcycle accident. I strongly suggest you skidaddle over to iTunes and check out both the original record by THE SHANGRI-LAS and then Bette Midler's fabulous over the top remake from her 1st album "THE DIVINE MISS M"
To be perfectly honest, when LITTLE SHOP opened way back in the day, I was getting nowhere writing musicals and I was so jealous of it that I never went to see it and so, still to this day don't really know the full score inside and out, so I actually don't even know where or when the girls in LITTLE SHOP do that! Whoops!
Oh, but I did finally get over my jealousy (thank God) and loved seeing Kerry Butler (the original Penny) in it on Broadway. Fabulous!
Do you have a particularly favorite part of the score? for whatever reason- either you had the most fun recording it or you just love how it works in the final film?
Right now, I think I get that big thrill from the moments I got to write movie underscore music in the middle of songs (like in WELCOME TO THE 60's and YOU CAN'T STOP THE BEAT") and made it (hopefully) all seamless and propulsive yet stayed true to the scenes and moments I was "playing". Getting to combine my life as a movie scorer and a musical song-writer was really fulfilling.
Miss Pennywise, you can't imagine how wonderful it is to hear stories like yours. Thank you.
gorgeous.
I have another question-
Did you score the "Mod Girls" during WELCOME TO THE 60's before it was cut? and what did it sound like or what would it have sounded like?
Would the music go all Hullabaloo?
Marc, one of the things I loved about the score is that you incorporated most if not all of the background vocals that are included in the Broadway production (sections of I Know Where I've Been and You Can't Stop the Beat). And I really liked the "Good Morning Baltimore" underscore in the scene with Wilbur and Tracy in the Hardee Har Hut.
Mateo, I haven't a clue what you are talking about!
and thank you DD'L, thank you very much
omg. im not making it up! :)
Edna and Tracy admire a flock of Mod Girls walking down the baltimore streets just outside Pinky's. It was filmed, I guess it was cut before you scored it then.
Do you have the companion book? There is a photo of this scene.

Marc, you said that it's Shayna Steele singing the "oooo-oooo" crowd solo during I know where I've been, but is it her singing it on screen as well, or has it been dubbed for another actress a la "New Girl in Town" and "Welcome to the 60?" The woman singing that line looked a lot like Sasha Allen to me...
I went to the sing-a-long screening at Kips Bay last night (with Nikki and Elijah!) and saw the movie for the 4th time...I watched Brenda more closely and noticed that she has a conversation with Velma after "Nicest Kids in Town"...and looks down at her stomach...maybe Velma is telling her she's getting fat...and Brenda looks guilty/self concious. Later in the scene you see her talking to Corny in the background and as he turns away from her, I heard her say somthing like "Pay attention to me!" I'm assuming this is the moment when they find out she's pregnant. Just thought I'd share.
Rymes I noticed this too.
I wish this lil subplot was in the movie more.
Brenda is all kinds of Tarty too. If you watch her she is always chewing gum, and has this F.U. attitude about her.
I love Brenda.
oh! yeah, they filmed more stuff for Edna and Tracy on the street (hula-hoops!) that never got used, I never even saw the footage
it is only Shayna's voice, the actress is one of the dancers who are in the entire film
and Rymes, enough about Brenda, how was the sing-a-long?? Do you sing your face off?
One of my co-workers mentioned the sing-a-long (we're going to a regular showing tomorrow night). I told her Hairspray gets a sing-a-long whenever I play the CD in the privacy of my own home!!
You know, I remember that just coming out of my mouth and then asking Scott "Is there actually something called chocolate swirl?"
We both felt it was an ice cream flavor. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
(Now I'm hungry!)
Me too! Maybe Ben & Jerry could figure out what chocolate swirl was for a yummy little cross promotion? :)

It's on the Atkins Plan... it can't be good.
I don't believe for a moment that Motormouth Maybelle was eating something from the Atkins Plan.
A friend of mine asked me to burn the soundtrack for him. I said that if he liked it, he should support the creators and purchase it (he has a good job and could easily afford it). So I ordered a 2nd CD which I'll give to him when it comes in. Maybe he'll feel guilty.
Oh, and I'll probably take my mom to see the movie when I visit her in a couple of weeks (making my 3rd time).
NYers: how long has that huge Hairspray billboard wrapped around the corner on 42nd and 8th been there? The one with the video screens in the center. I saw it for the first time today, that thing is pretty cool.
LOL...Sorry, Marc! I just wanted to comment on my earlier thoughts on Brenda...Anyway, the sing-along was great! It was wonderful to see Nikki and Elijah, they are so sweet and seem very down to earth! Nikki said she gets recognized in strange places like at CVS and people sometimes call her Tracy, but she thinks its great! She is such a very sweet and cool person (I am a big Nikki fan). She even sang a little bit of "Good Morning Baltimore" and Elijah and a fan helped her turn it into a rap! LOL...Fun times! Oh, and she led the whole audience in singing "Happy Birthday" to Elijah, he turned 21 yesterday! They signed some autographs and took pics with a lucky few fans who were close enough to ask...and stuck around and watched (and sang along) with the beginning of the movie. It was really cool, and also pretty surreal to see Nikki watching and singing along with herself on screen. And almost everyone in the audience knew the songs already! This was definitely one of the bests audiences I've seen it with! And Marc, you will be happy to know they PUMPED up the sound, and it was blasting loud enough so you could still hear with everyone singing along, and it sounded great!
Anakela- can you take a photo of it?
That things is called "The cube" and I guess it debuted today.
Hairspray and Rush Hour are the first to advertise on it. I read about this new thing this morning- but I havent seen it yet.
I can prob swing by it again tonight and take a pic on my way home...just glad to know I haven't been walking around *that* cluelessly, and it hasn't been up for weeks or something. :) It is pretty sweet.

hahaha.
no you arent going crazy. :)
Marc, I didn't know you were there too! I just saw the pics from Broadway World! You shoulda given your fans a shout out! :)

It looks pretty cool!

Thanks!
The cube design really works out for Hairspray's ad campaign.

Marc,
Knowing that you are such good friends with Ms. Midler (I'm jealous), what role do you think would have been perfect for her in the film? And, what did she think about the final product?

You beat me to it seaweed...I did get pics, though, and I think what I like about this The Cube (ok- besides the fact that we are apparently now *naming* billboards here in NYC?) is the fact that there are little tiny Hairspray logos on the bottom of it, so if you were walking under The Cube and looked up you would see a bunch of logos (well- you would if there wasn't a bunch of scaffolding above your head blocking the view :)). That is pretty brill.

Wow...I WAS out of it today. I walked right by there after (in this order) losing the lotto again (I give up! I'm apparently NOT meant to see it as a live show! Honestly!), getting my framed signed 110 windowcard from Triton, and going to the Nederlander to drop off the RENT ticket for tomorrow night. I'll check it out when I'm back in Manhattan! (Probably tomorrow...lol. I just sleep in Brooklyn.)
