Jonathan Mandell says: "There's craftmanship in the way the playwright is able to maintain suspense in a plot full of surprises. There's also cleverness in the dialogue, and in the wacky characters, reflecting McDonagh's hip wit in the bad boy tradition of Joe Orton. The production design is flawless; Anna Fleischle's costumes and especially her sets are solid. But this time around, I found "Hangmen" ultimately less than satisfying; all the caveats I expressed four years ago still exist, and now loom larger for me."

I somehow missed that Charles Isherwood is at the WSJ now. That’s a good fit and I’m glad Charles is writing for a major publication again after his stint with Broadway Briefing.
I hope he has the travel budget that the Journal gave Terry Teachout to review theatre across the country.

Those are great reviews, a Tony nom for Best Play seems likely, and with that nom, McDonagh will tie Arthur Miller (5) in fifth place for most nominations in the category.
And if he loses (I think he will), he will be the biggest loser in the category as well.

Of course the joke of a critic, Ayanna Prescod, took issue with us and mischaracterized the entire production.

Hadn't heard about this but just stopped by the Golden to pick up tickets for tomorrow night and seems David Threlfall has been out all week, presumably Covid-related. Back next week but I'll be gone so seeing the understudy. Sorry to miss him.

I saw Colin McPhillamy last night and he was terrific, very lived in performance.

Saw the show last night. We all had a nice time, thought it was fun but kind of forgettable? Fantastic cast. I'm a huge fan of David Threlfall from Shameless, it was great to see him on stage. Alfie Allen was great too, but I tried to image Dan Stevens doing the role, and I just couldn't imagine him having the same creepy yet enticing performance Alfie had. But I loved the comfortable performances of every one in the cast, they all seemed (to borrow The Quibber's phrase) so lived in. Tracie Bennett I was so excited to see onstage again, couldn't believe she's the same actress who I loved as Judy Garland. (Funnily with the blonde hair she reminded me of Tatiana Maslany.)
The set is was very cool, as were lighting and sets. And glad the show moved so quickly, it's tough seeing a show on a Monday night!
