Not surprised by this...but have absolutely no interest in this show.

Not why, but how?! I imagine the seating arrangement will be dramatically different. Doesn't this also make the Gershwin the biggest house on Broadway?
Exactly where I figured it would wind up. It really is the best space for this massive show. It'll be nice to see a hit show in there for a change (if I recall, Grinch is the only show to recoup there since opening in 199. The script may be slight, but the production values are insane and the careful nostalgic touches achieve their intended effect with fans. The audience response in London was the most positive and overwhelming reaction to any show I've ever seen. Within its first ten minutes, the show received its first of many ovations from the audience. Equal doses of charm and spectacle, I found it thrilling from start to finish.

The Gershwin is CURRENTLY the largest Broadway house. It seats 1,933 whereas the Lyric seats 1,932. Only a one seat difference!

Ah ok, thanks Cfried! I knew they were close, didn't imagine it was that close.
The grosses indicate that the current configurations have the Gershwin at 1,807 seats and the Lyric at 1,896 seats.

Ah, I did not know that! Thanks!

I am surprised they opted for the Lyric but clearly ATG which Sonia Friedman Productions is part of is willing to spend the money on renovating the Lyric and turning it a smaller 1500 seater theatre since it'll be a hit from day one.
I read somewhere that the entire theater is going to make you feel like you're at Hogwarts! That alone excites me. I think the Lyric is a difficult theater for some shows just because of it's size, but this show is PERFECT for it.
Sonia Friedman knows what she's doing, that's for sure.
I can definitely see how they can transform it into Hogwarts. I mean, the staircase can be changed to make it look like the Hogwarts one. The restrooms could look like the school's and the stained glass windows can be changed into the mermaids. The lounge that they have can be made into Slughorn's chamber where they have the parties in.
Interested to see what they do.
So, I just saw this in London a couple of weeks ago... and man, I wish that they could just bring that entire cast over, but it seems like John Tiffany's hoping the cast will be a mix of American and British, according to his recent TimeOut interview, so maybe there's hopes for a couple of OLC to come over.
‘Harry Potter…’ hits Broadway in 2018 – what can you say about the cast? Do you know if it’ll be Brits or Americans?
‘I think it’ll be a mixture – it’s part of what American audiences want, proper toffs!’

it would be a crime if Jamie Parker doesn't transfer with this IMO.

Oh dear I can hear the terrible attempts at British accents already.
it seems bizarre to reduce the capacity of one of the biggest broadway theatres when this could easily have gone to a more perfect sized theatre like the Hirschfield .
It's not just the size of the theater. They transform the interior. That could have never been done at the Hirschfeld.

Any estimates on when tickets go on sale? I want to make sure I am ready.
Finally, the theater will host a hit. Ironic that a 'cursed' show will break its curse.

If they could do it in an old theater in London, they could have easily done the same here.

Nothing to do with age, it has everything to do with space.

Exactly. Not to mention there...
There is room at the Lyric for the dementors to fly in from the boxes. Not so much at the Hirschfeld. Plus, that ceiling at the Hirschfeld is gorgeous & handpainted. I doubt they would be too pleased in putting glow-in-the-dark anything on top on it. The Lyric's ceiling is much plainer.
