Yay for Hairspray! Saw it for the third time the other day.
It still boggles my mind that C&L is still maintaining such good business.
It's ahead of C&L at number six.
per box office mojo: $92,110,000
That is a great total, but I think financially it still has not done well, right? wasn't the final cost of the film $100 million, bumped for the $70 million budget that was originally announced. So they have not even made their money back. Unfortunately, if it brought in what C&L did the first weekend($70 million, I think), that would be something to get excited about and then I will say that they will soon start to make a profit...but who knows at this time, and how it has done overseas.
Overall, it is still a great success.
I think it was still $75 million.
It KIND OF balances out though... Is the C&L soundtrack number 3-4 on the billboard charts? Plus, C&L had a higher budget.
thats true.
No one is out buying Chuck and Larry merchandise, or reenacting scenes on youtube. :)
True.
Oh, *I* am.
Congrats to Hairspray.
A month or so back, I predicted $120 million domestic. I was "scoffed" at by many.
I think when all is said and done, I'll be pretty dang close to dead-on. The movie could even surpass my estimate. It will depend on how much it drops off in the next 2-4 weeks.
I would like to see what the TOTAL grosses are (box office, cds, merch, plus once the DVDs come out.)
I don't think we'll ever have access to those numbers, so I'm just gonna say.. a lot!
Actual Totals are in and Hairspray actually came in at #5 this weekend with $6,396,666 - moving up a position from last weekend.
Beating Underdog's $6,352,377 and Chuck and Larry's $5,877,915

See I hate that. 'Cause now in all the press it's already considered #6. Oh well. Yay Hairspray for moving up a position even amongst all the heavy hitters.
Early Monday estimates show another solid weekday for Hairspray. Holding at #5, but only $200k behind the #4 Stardust, which just opened!
Domestic gross over $93 mil, looks like it will go over $100 mil domestic this weekend!
I really want to know how the film did in Argentina and Mexico.
I wish 'Mojo's international charts were as accurate/up-to-date.
There international charts take forever.
those b*tches.
Less than $7 million to $100 million domestic!
they earn about a million a day, although its starting to head into the upper 900,000 bracket.
But yes, come Sunday - 100M baby.
Hairspray has a pretty unique audience- and all the recent movies to pop up since its release are all in the same genre- Action/Comedy, AdultComedy, Fantasy. Thus spreading out their box office earnings- and keeping Hairspray strong.
Superbad will no doubt take away from Rush Hour, Simpsons and whats left of Chuck & Larry.
Hopefully Hairspray can remain around 6 in the charts this weekend.
I've seen it 6 times already, so I'm doing my part!!

I love how on the video, it has a diff. mix of the music! To me it's diff. I would love MP3s of these! :) It also has a small blog like Mateo's. It has some scans of mag covers and stuff. Cool. :)
