of all the show links ive seen, austin is my least favorite. i dont understand any of his acting choices.
and you guys are confusing me, maybe this is the point youre arguing? lip syncing happens in probably every movie musical, music video, etc. The sound and video are separate and put together later- its easier to edit, remix, overlay, etc- when its done well, you cant tell its been done, which is the norm. This doesnt necessarily imply that someone else is doing the singing, just that the sound was taped in a recording studio and the visuals were done elsewhere.
and from wikipedia: It is also common for singers to lip sync on live television, especially when making short guest appearances in chat shows, where neither the time available or the size of the studio makes it possible to rehearse or do a live performance with musicians.
So if your proof is that his mouth doesnt match the music, it doesnt mean he didnt do the singing, it just means he cant lip sync to save his life.

Posted: 6/24/06 at 3:07amI'm pretty sure from what people have said, imdb.com lists the singing voice for the character as a different person and that the only part he actually sings is the balcony scene.

i saw that mentioned but i also saw one or two people exclaim that he lip syncs and thats why i was confused... you shouldnt just assume that because he was singing over a backup tape at a tv show that it wasnt his voice anyway.
imdb is not really the most reliable thing either, they say you need to be a representative to alter info but they dont do anything to verify that you are who you say you are.

Here is an interview with the guy who sang for Zac in High School musical. He sings part of 'Breaking Free' and weel you can be the judge for yourself but even the interviewer says: "You are definatly the voice of Troy". I'm sorry to break this to you all but Zac actually did VERY little singing in the movie.

You guys ever get the feeling people are just repeating themselves over and over and over again? C'mon, we KNOW he did scarcely any singing AT ALL in 'High School Musical'! You're hardly "break[ing] this to [us] all"; it's been stated several times throughout this thread and really DOESN'T need to be stated again. We got it the first fifty eight times. :P
Bear in mind these:
a) 'High School Musical' was filmed in 2005 sometime (I presume, going by the January '06 release date). It's now the middle of 2006. That's PLENTY of time for vocal training. Even bearing in mind the UCLA audtions alluded to earlier in this thread, that's still four months between February and now, and it is highly possible for someone to suck at a public audition and be awesome away from that one isolated incident. We're theatre geeks, we should KNOW that.
b) 'High School Musical' and 'Hairspray' - as the "ZOMG we h8 HSM!" crowd will fully know - are two different beasts entirely. Just because someone's voice may turn out to not be suitable for one after all doesn't mean they'll be rubbish at the other. To pull an example out of mid-air: Nathan Lane was brilliant in 'The Producers', but he could not successfully play Link Larkin, for another mid-air example. That doesn't mean he's rubbish, that just means he's not so suited to certain roles.
c) MARC SHAIMAN has seen Zac Efron with regards to the role of Link Larkin and said "dudes, lay off, he was good". MARC SHAIMAN HIMSELF. You remember him, right? He wrote the music for 'Hairspray', he co-wrote the lyrics for 'Hairspray', and if ANYONE is going to know what would be best for his baby, it'd be him. Not you. :P
How about we stop it with the "ugh, I'm going to be sick, no no no, this is grotesque, ugly, wrong, I might kill myself, oh noes, teh horror teh horror" melodrama and WAIT AND SEE. This is only a rumour, remember. And even if it does turn out to be true, there's no way you can FAIRLY judge the decision without seeing Zac in action as Link yourself. So give it a rest, you mouthy queens. :P
Seriously, was no one ever taught the maxims "don't knock it until you've tried it" and "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all"? *rolls eyes*

see, in the original film and on the stage most Links have been in their mid-twenties or older... So even older audiences can find him somewhat dreamy, and that fine.
BUT the real character is only 17-18 and when you put the characters in a movie they really should look it. Who we find attractive as adults is not what a young girl OR boy might find attractive. So just because WE dont think hes right - is not the reaction you might get when you ask highschool and Juniorhigh kids. To them Zac IS Link as far as popularity goes. Link would be in those Teen mags of the 60s and Zac IS in those Teen mags of today...
I dont know If I am making any sense. can anyone follow that?

mateo, i understand what you are saying, and agree with you in some parts, but:
I think the the story of Hairspray should be kept more for the 15 and up ages, with its sexual aspects and the fact that aside from the flashy costumes it's not really a children-friendly show.
Therefore, in my opinion, Link should be kept in the early to mid-twenties range.

ok, you make perfect sense- their are PLENTY of adult themes.
But the character is not in his tewnties. The story is pretty clear that they are all in Highschool.
We all have seen how tiny and young nicole blonsky looks. If you pair her with a guy in his twenties it will look very akward, and very wrong.

Posted: 6/24/06 at 11:17pmI think Hairspray is shaping up to become a really dumb movie..That's just my humble opinion. I am all for casting unknowns and talented people but let's focus on talent. Chicago worked so well because it reinvented the images of Richard Gere, Renee Zelleweger, and Catherine Zeta Jones..most people didn't know they could sing or dance. Too bad that is lost on these producers. Yet, another movie that will join The Producers, and Rent in the half off bin at Walmart. Hopefully, the haven't ruined Dreamgirls....

Posted: 6/24/06 at 11:29pmI go around on the imdb boards too, and I just have to ask, why are people making such a big deal about John Travolta being Edna? I mean, I liked him in Grease and the guy can dance, so I'm actually going to give the man a chance before this movie comes out.

I dont know why people are so hung up on these actors.
When we dont even have half the cast announced, and the ones that we do - have made great movies and have proven to have great talent.
