HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2 will come out in January, and a third sequel is in the works. Trust me, Zac Efron could ride that juggernaut of a franchise until he is old and graying.
You can have a carbon copy and not have the original cast members. I mean, material-wise, I do not see there being any new innovations (and I do not count new songs as innovations).
To translate a stage musical into a film, you almost need to reinvent the material. RENT is almost a carbon copy because it did not reveal or highlight any new facet of the material. There was nothing profoundly different that set it aside from its stage version.
As I said, I would love to be proven wrong. It is just my prediction. To be honest, I love HAIRSPRAY as a stage musical and I do not see or want a need for it to be made into a film. Or perhaps I am just more excited for DREAMGIRLS, who knows?

wicked4life- breathe, ^^
Most of us would agree... we all know he lipsynched in that film. BUT I dont know if you read the whole thread. Marc Shaiman, who most of us love and respect confirmed that he tried out for the film and did a great job singing the part. So obviously he can sing. Marc would have no reason to lie.

Zac can sing. He has been in musicals before. He was not dubbed for the movie, however he was given "vocal enhancement" in some parts of the music.
If Zac IS cast as Link Larkin, it will not be the end of the world and it would not be the worst choice for the role.

Posted: 6/22/06 at 1:18ami justed watched the today show performance... and there is a track playing the backup vocals, while the kids sing over it... So I cant quite make out his voice.

Posted: 6/22/06 at 1:34amMy wonder is really just about what Marc said. Apparently, he sang 'like a dream' at his audition. But, and I'm being 100% completely honest here, he was HORRIBLE at the UCLA audition. I mean, seriously horrible. Almost no vibrado, and so pitchy, and it didn't even sound good (I couldn't make out the lyrics, but it sounded very much like Suddenly Seymour with a Justin Timberlake edge to it). That's what confuses me -- maybe he's changed a bit, but I just can't grasp how much.

February 19 of this year.
And yeah, I would have no doubt that he would get into both. I mean... come on. He's Zac Efron.

Here's the weird thing. Before it came out, I was seraching on IMDB.com and found this guys page, who wrote the song "Getcha Head in the Game". It used to list him as "singing voice for Troy Bolton" in High School Musical...but looking at it now that is gone. I think there is a My Fair Lady cover-up going on. I'm not saying Zac can't sing...but I really don't think he sang in the movie.

Posted: 6/22/06 at 2:17amI am fairly certain that Zac CAN sing, as I said earlier. Whether or not he is a good singer, that is a whole different matter.

also see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Seeley
"His voice was blended with Zac Efron's voice on the soundtrack to the film High School Musical."
as well as here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_School_Musical_Soundtrack
if you scroll down there is a listing of performers for each song and Andrew Seeley is credited and not Zac.
although..I will be the first to admit how unreliable Wikipedia is. Anyone can post anything on it.

Posted: 6/22/06 at 2:49amThey blend a lot of singers voices.. if you have ever seen the lizzie mcguire movie... the song hilary duff sings at the end "dreams ar emade of" all the high notes - are CLEARLY from some other womans voice.

Posted: 6/22/06 at 3:08amI actually got to see Austin once in L.A., where he subbed for Matt Morrison, who was actually supposed to be in the tour, but left early for some reason. Anyways, I kept thinking, "This guy IS Matt!" because he was just so fantastic. Austin would be a great pick.

i don't know anything about zac efron being cast as link, but according to a news article, lucas grabeel got a callback for the part. he plays ryan evans in high school musical (the blonde brother who can actually sing and dance very well).

that's the link to the article. the hairspray info should be somewhere towards the end of it.
