Posted: 6/20/06 at 11:06pmOh, gosh. I was supporting my friend at her UCLA audition and she went inside and stood onstage with other hopefuls, including this fool. The two of us both agreed that he had a horrendous, horrible voice, I swear. He can't be Link. Oh, gosh.

I haven't heard of any High School Musical fans?
No offense to anyone who does, but from what I can tell, HSM fans are people who SAY they are into theatre but don't know anything more than what they sing in their High School choral classes. At least it is that way in my area. Which coincidentally, are the same people who swear that Wicked was God's gift to the Earth.

Well, I admit, I'm a fan of the movie. I thought it was fun to watch, and I love to rewatch "Stick to the Status Quo" over and over. But that could also be because I know the guy who plays Zeke (the black kid who bakes). Regardless, though, I'm a fan.
However, I'm also a person who has common sense, and though I'm a fan, I can still say that this kid is just a non-talented teen hearthrob who does not deserve any role in this or any future singing movie at all. Enough said.
Now I'm gonna go watch some High School Musical. :)

I actually agree that High School Musical can be fun to watch. Especially with a huge group of people, because EVERYONE seems to know the lyrics.
Volley, very cool that you know Zeke, he was one of the few people I found tolerable. Him and Joshua Grabeel (sp) aka the blonde brother. Love him. He can actually sing/dance somewhat well!

When I saw the movie, I found the part with Tony Hawk and Tony Award comparison amusing. I actually thought that was pretty clever.
Oh, and the creme bruele part. I laughed at that, too. But the rest of it was just...so Disney. I used to like Disney... lol I guess I just grew out of it. Except for some like the Phantom of the Megaplex one. That was the best! haha

Posted: 6/21/06 at 12:28amobviously, it's casting done by a marketing team, this makes the movie appealing to little kids who love hsm.

Actually, the casting of this show has been downrigh brilliant. They first overlooked Harvey. Just passed him over. And hoped America would not be bothered. They figured the Broadway community would be angry but if they let that one pass, the producers would have free reign to do anytyhing else they wanted to. And sisnce there are no picket lines or skywriting for Harvey, I guess we have rolled over. With John Travolta, the producers went for a superstar who (1) can sing and dance and has done so in HUGE hit films, (2) will probably turn in at the least a very interesting performance, (3) actually gives the film Academy Award buzz if he does (4) will get the film MILES of free press. Then they VERY wisely cast the other roles from each of the food groups: an unknown for Tracey (Nicki Blonsky) who has the requisite voice in spages and is the right size, backed her up with a very well-known young commedianne (Amanda Bynes) who has a huge tween and slightly older following - don't discount her ability or popularity, a veteran comedian who can sing and dance passably (Billy Crystal) as Wilbur. It would make total sense, from their viewpoint, to cast a kid from High School Musical. The film is a phenom. I just hope he has the chops because, frankly, it's a key part and the other cast are pretty strong.
I have always said Hollywood - where I work, BTW and I admit to being as guilty as anyone - almost always screws up musical adaptations. Maybe this time they (we) got it right.
As long as they don't cut "Timeless To Me."

I think I'm the only person here who didn't vomit in their mouths at the sight of Zac Efron. XD He does do a fraction more singing in HSM; if you listen to, say, Breaking Free, it's INCREDIBLY obvious that two different people are singing the male part, one person doing the first couple of lines, then the other taking over for the rest of the song (and it's not rocket science to work out the first is Zac and the second is Andrew Seeley :P).
Playing devil's advocate/person who is going to get flamed to hell for saying this, it's not much different to how they used to do movie musicals back in the day. Deborah Kerr/Natalie Wood/whoever would do the initial speaking intros to the songs, then Marni Nixon's singing voice would take over.
I genuinely loved High School Musical. I don't make the mistake of thinking it's great art. I just think it's a really sweet Disney movie. :3
Anyhoo. I would hope they would cast a Link who could do his own singing suitably well, but I wouldn't complain *too* heartily if this rumour turned out to be true. I'm a bad bad person and deserve to be slapped for actually liking Zac Efron. XD

The movie will loose credibility if its known that one cast member was dubbed bring it devastating reviews...
A tv musical on the disney channel is a different thing.

Er... don't generalize about HSM fans. I think it's a very cute movie, and I wouldn't say I know nothing about "real" theatre. The music is also very catchy. No, it's not high art, but it never claims to be, either. I do agree that it should stay a movie and not go onstage, but I think people need to give it a rest and just enjoy it for what it is.
Hahaha, yeah, the Tony Hawke/Tony Award thing was clever, and let's not forget the Sondheim reference, either.

Hi Kiddos,
This is Marc Shaiman here. I co-wrote HAIRSPRAY. I have tried to never post anything about the movie casting, and don't plan to after this post, but I happened along this thread...
Although I cannot tell you if Zac Efron has been cast as Link, I can tell you he is one year older than our Tracy, Nikki Blonsky, so his age would be perfect.
And at his audition, he sang (and acted) like a dream. I have no idea about High School Musical, but the boy can sing and sing well. We'd be lucky to have him.
Just wanted to give you those facts!
See ya at the movies!
Marc
