History is indeed happening. You could see that Lin either was or had been crying - honestly, I'm so glad this is happening to this cast. By all accounts they are good, talented, hardworking people and they deserve it.

There was nothing wrong with that performance.  Sometimes people just like to complain.

^Lol, but yes.

You make a good point.  They have rarely if ever telecast anything with regards to the Broadway awards...most years they are announced in the non-televised award segments.

But this year, it would have seem fair to show more than one production. I mean Fun Home is no slouch in the music area either and is very innovative in a different way (No offense to the other two nominees). It's hard to buck a phenomenon I guess.

This isn't like the Tonys where everything nominated gets to perform- were that the case, the show would be about five days long.

I think Fun Home is a stunning artistic achievement, but it would have been so out of place to have a performance from the show at the Grammys. Hamilton is a phenomenon, but it sounds like most contemporary music today and that is what the Grammys are generally honoring. Fun Home, as great as it is, sounds very little like what's being heard in the mainstream music world.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

You have to look at the way the Grammys think to understand it.  Taylor Swift beating out Kendrick and The Weeknd is a perfect example of what they prefer.  If Hamilton hadn't spent some time at the top of the hip hop charts (along with whatever lobbying it took to get the people who would rather show a Gwen Stefani video than a lifetime achievement award or two), it probably wouldn't have been on the broadcast either.

I wish the Grammy cut off time was the same as the Tonys.  It's weird how records that seem old compete against new ones.

I thought Fun Home should have won the award last year, but for some reason the off-Broadway wasn't eligible (for reasons I'm unsure of).

I didn't say I realistically expected it - time wise - but it would have still been nice.  But I think you explain it best and accurately... but in a sense explains what very wrong to me. They were willing to showcase Hamilton partly because it's innovative but partly because it's what contemporary music sounds like today....so if it's different and innovative to what is commonly being heard, it doesn't get the time? To me, that's a problem. So the Grammy's reward something new and different - as long as it's not too different?

Don't mind me..just thinking out loud.

I don't think the meeting at the Grammys was a group of people saying, "Ah, yes, Hamilton sounds very contemporary—let's give it a performance slot."

I think the meeting went more like, "Holy **** this thing is really mega-big, let's capitalize on it." (And the diversity factor probably didn't hurt either.)

And yet the Grammy audience was scratching their heads at the Hamilton performance. As was basically everyone else watching from the tv.  Fail.

Love that folks on our board can speak for the millions watching or sitting in the Grammy theater. At this point it's all about furthering the brand not selling tickets which don't exist. It was on the Grammys. It won. It's different and contemporary odd for Broadway. Maybe that's something people into music may or may not want to check out. It didn't need to prove a thing. Just further coronation of a Broadway shaking event. I was thrilled it was on and that I got to see the opening again. Need to see it again.

I wish they did a different song but it was still better than all of the performances tonight (excluding Kendrick). While I understand that it was probably chosen cause it requires no background info and it features the entire cast, I believe for an audience of music fans and not musical theater fans, My Shot would have probably resonate better.

It was pretty obvious that they were gonna win, they even had a Grammy ready backstage. The only reason why they were asked to perform in the first place was because they have become this culture phenomenon. it's probably very unlikely we will see another musical perform at the Grammys any time soon, let alone have their category announced live. The other musicals nominate actually got more promo than they would have had just by being in the same category. lol

it it was also obvious that the Grammys were capitalizing on Hamilton's popularity. They teased that Hamilton was performing multiple times throughout the show. It's the same way with how they appeal to Adele fans, they kept mentioning they're coming right up in hope you'll stick around and kept watching.

Fun fact -there were more than 80 competitive Grammys; only 8 were given during the show; 1 of the 8 was musical theater album!

Theater nerd alert:  when Lin Manuel tweeted about blasting Kendrick in the Richard Rodgers I thought he meant Anna. And then I heard Taylor Swift beat Kendrick for album of the year and I likewise thought "I didn't know Anna Kendrick had an album."

I feel a million years old. I've never heard of any of these people. I may need to crawl out from under my rock.

^Hmm just no. Have you heard her in the movie soundtracks of The Last Five Years or Into the Woods??! I don't care for her. But different tastes, you may like her there

It was so weird to see the audience in the Broadway theater give the song a thunderous standing ovation, then they cut back to the Grammy audience who were sort of clapping but many of them were just sitting there watching and not moving as if they were just waiting for it to be over. Not sure if many of them really got it or were even paying much attention.

And the sad part is that they can get free tickets so easily and the people who love it and respect it can't afford it.

I am even more excited for July 1st now. I seriously can not wait to see this. I'm glad I bought my mid premium ticket last year. It seemed like a huge amount of money at the time, but looking at ticket prices now, I definitely got lucky.
