Did the various artists change up the lyrics for Wrote My Way Out? To me, the best tracks have been Immigrants and My Shot because they aren't straight covers."
Yes. Wrote My Way Out is pretty much a whole new song, like Immigrants.

Another great one! And a Jonathan Larson reference!

here's wait for it!
We need a song like Wrote My Way Out right now. I loved it.
I think it could be a viable top 40 hit.

"Wrote My Way Out" is one of my favorites so far. Perfect way to transform a song.
"Wait for It" is one that should've been remixed more. There's no point in doing a straight up cover of the song when Usher's vocals don't really come close to Leslie's. If they would've adjusted the lyrics it could've been turned into a top 40 hit.
I think the subtle changes they made along with Ushers very good vocals could make this a hit. They made it sound a bit more like a commercial studio recording, if that makes sense.

Helpless (Ashanti and Ja Rule) is out. It's good. Pretty close to the original with just a few lyric changes. And I think one verse was dropped? I was only half listening.
HELPLESS IS EVERYTHING I HAVE EVER WANTED OUT OF LIFE.

Just got "Helpless" on my iTunes. "Early 2000s pop" is exactly what came to mind, too—and I love it. In my opinion, it's less adventurous and ambitious than the other tracks so far...and that's partly why it's fabulous.
I think it's canny marketing that they're including both fairly faithful covers, and original 'inspired-by' songs on this album. Established Hamilton fans will buy this regardless, but Hamilton novices who give the album a try because they love Busta Rhymes or whoever, might get to know and love the faithful covers as well, and then seek out the original versions. Not that the show needs more fans, but still.

Bumping this as the full album releases today. It's already Friday here in NZ so I'm listening through. Stand outs for me so far are Say Yes To This and Congratulations. The Interludes are cool dance beats. The Demos are really fun to hear.
They were doing the preview event at the Rodgers today with the live stream.
I thought that Andra Day's "Burn" was fab.

I actually wasn't that impressed with Andra Day's performance. I've listened to a few of her songs before and loved her voice, but it didn't sound that great during her performance IMO.
I haven't liked any of the songs released so far, and I'm reluctant to buy the whole album, given my reaction to the first bunch. Is there any way to buy the remaining songs separately? I'm thinking no.
most songs on itunes can be purchased separately
i just finished listening to the mixtape an hour ago and i thoroughly enjoyed it. highlights for me were Burn, Say Yes to This, History Has Its Eyes On You, Satisfied, It's Quiet Uptown, Congratulations and both Dear Theodosias.
On iTunes, almost all the songs say "album only," and those songs can't even be previewed.

Are you in the US? The album will be released in midnight in your time zone; after that you'll be able to preview/buy what you want.
Great! Thank you so much for that information!
ah sorry mac i didn't mean to imply i used itunes to listen, anakela is right about it being released at midnight in the US. i finagled my way onto Australian spotify and listened to the mixtape there.

So glad it's all out now!
So much of it is quite good. Some tracks are fabulous (Jill Scott hell yeah, John Legend, a few more. I love Common).
And then there's Jimmy Fallon.
Whose idea was this.
