There are 15 new musicals that will be eligible for Tony nominations this season. Is that a record number? I've been in NYC since 1982 and I don't recall a season that has ever had this many!
This season of abundant openings, not to mention the plays, and the revivals of both plays and musicals, is heartening to me, but I worry that there is so much "product" on the boards right now, many will not survive...
Back to my original question, any one know if this season's 15 new musicals on Broadway is a record number?
I'm pretty sure this year is a record. There were 13 new musicals in the 2016-17 season which I believe is the closest.
Many don't survive on a regular basis.
It would have been 16 new musicals if Gutenberg! wasn't considered a musical revival.

The season of 1927-1928 had 36, but I’m not sure if that’s a record.

More recently, 1971-1972 had 17 or so.
On another note…

have there ever been so many turkeys in one season?

I do find it interesting how with this many new musicals there's not a single 'hit' or even front runner. In 2016-2017 there was Dear Evan Hansen and Come From Away. So far, nothing similar has emerged.
