A few months before XANADU opened, I was sitting in a subway car when both Mary Testa and Cherry Jones got in the car without seeing each other. Mary recognized Cherry across the aisle and said in loud Testa tones "Hey, Cherry!". The two gals chatted a bit about nothing in particular.

Late one night after SPAMALOT, Chris Sieber got in my car, sat down and read a book. I didn't want to bother him but he looked around, caught my eye and smiled. We chatted till my stop.
Sweet guy and smoking hot. Beautiful skin.

I run into Michael Winther on the subway often. We're neighbors. Another sweetie.

I wish Patti LuPone would ride the subway. Then she could scream about how bad it is and bring attention to the mismanagement of the MTA.

when she was in Evita, Patti used to take the LIRR (and then the subway, I'd assume) on some days.

Not on the subway but on the street. My second time in NY ( a year ago) I saw SA and talked to John Gallagher Jr. before and after the show. I talked about what the show meant to me and how his performance inspires me. He was incredibly nice and we shared a good conversation. The next day im on the street and like hardcore bumped someone, I go to apologize and it was him and he was with a friend. He remember who I was, what show I told him i was seeing that day and we chatted for a few minutes. It was pretty amazing.

Not a Broadway performer, but Michael Riedel was selling water bottles on the downtown 1 train tonight.

$0.99 each. Not bad.

LOL jeremiah!

A few weeks ago I was on the train with Cherry Jones. She seemed to have a very pleasant demeanor and exited at Lincoln Center.

I couldn't tell you the last time I was on the subway. Oh, wait...I can! May 4, 2005 - my one and only time at Shea Stadium.

I get into the city via Penn Station and I usually walk to whatever theatre I'm going to. I did see Roger Bart, Beth Leavel, Derek Keeling, and Michael Rosenbaum (TV's Smallville) all in one day though. In fact, I saw Michael Rosenbaum twice. Then a few days later I walked past Kenita Miller on my way to Sephora.

Yes many Broadway performers use the Subway, I have seen Barrett Foa, Hugh Panero, Donna Lynn Chaplin, Euon Morton on the subway, about three months ago I ran into Lynn Redgrave on the subway No 1 train, on her way to the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Many theatrical performers use the public transportation to and from the theatre. It is more direct and faster than taking bus or a cab which is very expensive.

I met Anthony Rapp on the subway once. I went up to him and said "Hey, how's it going?" "I loved you in... (I knew he thought I was going to say RENT,) Adventures in Babysitting, Road Trip, Charlie Brown, Little Shop, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch." He than laughed and said "I'm surprised you didn't say RENT." And I winked and said "What's RENT?"

I was at a preview of "Cry-Baby" last spring and Harriet Harris and I were on the same the train headed downtown after the show. I was surprised that a Tony Award winner like Ms Harris did not have a car waiting for her after the show. It made me like her even more.

I have had a few situations not just with Broadway actors but with people in general regarding the subway. I would be talking with them on the street and say goodbye. And, the next thing you know we would both be on the same subway platform five min later.

This has happened with me after I stage door a show but it is a little creepy and makes me feel bad when it is a broadway performer because it looks like I am following them when in fact I am just going home.

Not on the subway, but I once passed Tony Roberts on the street during the time he was starring in "They're Playing Our Song." He was heding the opposite direction from me and we came within a few inches of each other.

The irony of that is that I had tickets in my pocket at the time to that day's performance of "They're Playing Our Song."

I saw Marian Seldes on the subway and chatted briefly about 6 years ago. About 2 years ago, she and I took the same train after seeing an off-bway reading and she was kind enough to chat for 20 or more minutes.

I talked to the now-late male lead from Steel Pier on train when he was in that show, it was around 7:30 and he was worried cause he was late, as I recall. Saw Philip Seymour Hoffman on a very crowded train, unrecognized, about a year ago, and talked to him on a snowy eve when we were both trying to find an obscure gallery in Chelsea that had an exhibit on the history of seances curated by Ricky Jay.

Brent Barrett and a couple of actors from Brigadoon at City Opera about 11 years ago took the same downtown 1 or 9 train from Linc Center.

The guy that played Bush in Stuff Happens was on a subway with me once.

There have been one or 2 other actors I've seen on subways but don't remember who.

One of the nicest moments in my life happened in the Subway with Real Broadway Stars.

This was when I first moved to NYC in 1980, I was coming home from Coney Island. The subway car I was in was almost empty except for a few people. Two of them were this really sweet older couple. All of a sudden I realized that they were Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn. To me they were the equivalent of royalty. It took several minutes for me to gather up the courage to do it but I finally went over to them. I apolgized for bothering them but said I just wanted to let them know how much I admired their work. They asked me how far I was going and when I told them I had at least another 45 minutes on the train, they invited me to join them. The train ended up stopping several times so I got to spend an hour and a half talking to them and asking questions. They were both sweet and kind and I wished the subway would have stayed delayed longer. It is still one of my favorite memories.

Years later when she won the Acadamy Award, I wrote Ms Tandy, congratulating her and mentioning that we had met on the subway. She wrote me back a long letter saying that both her and her husband had really enjoyed our talk and had a couple times wondered what had happened to that "pleasant boy who they had met on the subway". We kept corresponding with each other until her death four years later.

Not on the subway, but walking through the underground subway platforms/streets, I ran into Marian Seldes yesterday afternoon.

I told her "Marian, I loved you in DEUCE."

She put her right hand on my left cheek and said "I loved me in DEUCE too."

It was absolutely adorable. Then we chatted a bit about EQUUS opening night and she loved it. She has already seen it twice and said she will go back.

I love Marian Seldes so much and can't wait to see her back on the stage again!
