I didn't know about the article someone mentioned earlier, but wow. With each paragraph it was like another nail in the coffin.
this has nothing whatsoever to do with racism. C'mon Namo.
It isn't entirely Taye's fault anyway. He was hired.
I called it a very long to ago and everyone on here told me i was wrong..... yep.
For a show that had a loyal following of people who analyzed the box office numbers weekly questioning why they weren't higher for the current performer, and what that meant for the production and ergo the world, people seem awfully surprised it's closing.
...Which I doubt had very much to do with Diggs' decidedly tepid performance specifically and more with the fact the numbers had been lagging for much of the year.

"With each paragraph it was like another nail in the coffin."
An article. In the New York POST! Holds that much sway over potential Hedwig ticket buyers???????
As far as I know, it's the only official review out there. And gues who was going to keep going during the slow fall period? The locals. Who read the local rags. I'm not saying it's the final nail, but I'm sure it doesn't help any.
The main problem with that article is its accuracy.

Sweetie, the locals have seen it multiple times. But I think it's interesting that you think EVERY LIKELY TICKET BUYER TO HEDWIG READS THE POST!!!!!
I still say that once most people who were going to see it saw it, the show needed someone with a fan base. John has an extremely rabid fanbase. Darren has an extremely rabid fanbase. Taye? Not so much.
IMO, the show isn't built to run like a Wicked or a Phantom. It is built to burn bright and fast.

"I got to see JCM as Hedwig 8 times, including his first and last shows from second row orchestra aisle, and one very raunchy, very "Downtown" carwash... and on JCM's last show, he purposefully walked four steps out of his way to hand me the sheet music (when he usually tossed it into the crowd dismissively), and during one of the "I put on some makeup"s, he looked directly at me, pointed to me, and put his hand on his heart..."
"I honestly can't expect anything more out of this run, really."
"Dr. Seuss said it all: "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.""
Having so many mixed feelings. First, I love haterobics' eloquent words. The show had an unbelievably wonderful run, and brought so much joy and inspiration, not just to its long-time fans, but also to newly created fans. Because of its Broadway run, its message of love and acceptance was shared with a large and diverse audience. Everyone involved with bringing the show to Broadway have so much to be proud of. I do want to say that I don't think it's fair to lay all the blame on Taye. As others have said, there are so many behind-the-scenes reasons that we are not privy to. Its numbers were not what they once had been since many of the new shows came out in the spring of 2015. Sadly, the competition created by the new shows of 2015 impacted Hedwig . There is also the issue of finding a suitable replacement actor, as mentioned by others, and possibly, new plans of the Belasco. But I understand how intensely disappointing this is.

Phan2, can you tell us the plans with the Belasco on the Belasco thread?

Very very true. There are plenty of people who could be fantastic Hedwig's but the show needs the right person to work. It's just not part of the shows DNA to run for years with a new moderately known name or slightly know but capable performer coming in every few months. It really did have a truly great run.

The timing of the announcement just hits you right in the heart.

I sincerely doubt that the reaction to Taye being lukewarm had anything to do with the show closing...y'all are nuts. Their numbers have been down for most of the year, as someone else said. I sort of wish JCM's last performance had been the last time I'd seen the show, but I'll just pretend it was. :)
So, if Taye was selling well, the show would still be closing early during his run?!

People, come on. First of all, the entire world honors your sadness, but a wiser human than I once said, "To be free you must give up a little part of yourself." And right now, that part is the Broadway revival of Hedwig.

I am unaware of another Margo screen name, but that's just my name. I responded to the stupid remark, is all. It doesn't matter if you've been here for a decade or a day, stupid remarks should be called out. Luckily, two other users called that person out as well. Was just driving the point home

How great would it be if they got John to do the last show and had it filmed professionally? I'm sure it would certainly sell brilliantly to current and future fans of the show.
