Hello all. I have been fervently booking my trip to New York City. I had so much activity on my debit card that my credit union sent an automated message asking if all those purchases were kosher.
Here is my itinerary to my Dec. 22, 2023 --- Dec. 25, 2023 trip to the Big A:
Friday, December 22nd: 8:00 p.m. CHICAGO ( shocker)
Saturday, December 23rd: 5:00 p.m. TITANIQUE (tres maqnifique)
Saturday, December 23rd: 8:00 p.m. CHICAGO (I don't know how to quit you. )
Sunday, December 24th: 2:00 p.m. HARMONY ( to see Julie Benko)
Sunday, December 24th: 7:00 p.m. RADIO CITY MUSICAL HALL XMAS SPECTACULAR
As you might know, I am a fan of Leigh Zimmerman. I hope she will play Velma during my stay.
Spending those big bucks during the holiday season. Enjoy!
What's important is that you know what you like.
I'll be in the city at the same time, for a bit longer. Something I've been looking at as a possibility for the evening of Sunday, December 24 is a concert at 54 Below by Ann Hampton Callaway and Liz Callaway. I will be gone by New Year's Eve, but if I was there how good does a night with Aaron Tveit sound! That's what 54 Below has for NY's Eve.
If not that I might go to a classical concert at Carnegie Hall put on by the NY Strings Orchestra.
On X-mas Eve in 2018 I went to see trumpeter Chris Botti at the Blue Note jazz club, and he again has his annual set of dates there this year.
In 2019 I went to an evening performance by the Alvin Ailey dance company at NY City Center. Landing on a Sunday this year, they only have an afternoon show. Tickets for this season's performances, running November 29 to December 31, go on sale Tuesday, September 19 at 12pm.
That year after the dance performance, I hit a late night comedy show at Caroline's Comedy Club - which has sadly now closed. Billed as "Christmas Eve for Jews" it was a bit raunchy, and the comedians all made great sport of the family of blond, blue eyed, Mid-Westerners seated at the table front & center. I got a very good late night pizza at that club. I remember it being a better price than the late night eats at the Blue Note.
It is a bit early yet for all the nightclubs to have their schedules for late December out. Landing on a Sunday night might hamper some offerings this year, but I will keep an eye out for what might come up at Birdland or the Greenwich Village comedy clubs.
I am also waiting for the schedule to come out for the Big Apple Circus who set up at Lincoln Center. In both '18 & '19 I went on X-mas day to this family friendly show, which had completely different acts both years. In 2019 they had the Savitsky Cats made famous on America's Got Talent. That was something else for sure.
Unusual for me, I've got most of my show choices made already - some purchases were made with eye on the budget & others out of perhaps unnecessary concern that a show might be a "hot ticket" & sell out. I got a reasonable price on Merrily We Roll Along by buying early. This morning I got a ticket to Hell's Kitchen off-Broadway at the Public Theater, and there are only a handful of seats left. Other than those two shows, nothing I bought early for looks like a "hot ticket."
Besides Merrily, on Broadway I plan to see:
Harmony
I Need That
Gutenberg
off-Bway:
Here We Are
The Gardens of Anuncia
Hell's Kitchen
& at the Met Opera, Tannhauser
Edit: also here's what I have jotted down in my notes app for interesting showings at galleries/museums this December:
Tracy Emin paintings @ White Cube
Moma: Ed Rucha & Picasso
Neu Gallerie: Max Beckman
Met: Manet/Degas & also Matisse & Fauvists
Oh fug, I had no idea Liz Callaway and her sister were performing on Dec. 24th! That's my Harmony & Rockettes evening. Still, I'm looking forward to my shows. I'm a wee bit concerned about Titanique end time (100 minutes). Then, I have to go from 15th St. (Daryl Roth Theatre) and back to 49th street to see my 2nd Chicago. I am hopeful that any taxi I get will get me to my 2nd destination on time.

I would take the N or R from Union Sq to 49th Street. It'll be much faster and more reliable than a taxi. Especially with the bonkers holiday traffic and heavy heavy pedestrian mobs blocking many streets in midtown.
There are four other Radio City shows on the 24th. I'm sure you could exchange your 7pm ticket for an earlier show (10am, 1pm, 4pm) and still see your Calloway show.
On Sunday, Dec. 24th, I will be seeing Harmony at 2:00 p.m. I'm lucky that Liz Callaway is coming to town (Austin) on December 4th. I plan to be at that performance.

I did the 5pm Saturday Titanique and very easily made it via subway to Times Square for my 8pm Here Lies Love. Even had time to get a snack. You will be totally fine via subway.

Oh, you'll be fine taking the subway. I saw Titanique, took the subway up to midtown, had time for a cute dinner, and was perfectly on time for Parade. Much faster than dealing with the insane holiday traffic. Have a wonderful time!
