Hi All
Im new to this site and to the wonderful world of theatre in general but am discovering I love it more every day thanks to a link from dancing and singing. I am from the UK and am planning a trip to New York in December, can anyone give me any advice on the must see shows, should I get tickets before I travel? can I buy them there on the day? what should I be looking for? what should I avoid? any tips would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Lizzie
welcome to the board! sorry, i have never been to new york
, but there are plenty of people here who have (if they would only post)
have fun on your trip though!
Hi, welcome to the boards. I'm not from NY, but I can tell you that if you know for sure the dates and times when you will be in NYC and there is a show that you really have your heart set on seeing then you should get tickets now. You can always rush or SRO or go to TKTS, but if you want a guaranteed seat order them now. Sweeny Todd is coming back to Broadway so that would be a good show to see. For information about other shows read some more posts and check out the "Jump to a show" menu at the top of the page to find out about what shows are playing now.
thanks so much for the tips and the welcome, I have been surfing around and I have to admit I really like the idea of going to see wicked but Sweeny Todd might be a thought also, when does it start? (im travelling 3 - 9 Dec) I heard it was fantastic, I shall look into getting tickts in advance
I think Oct 21st, but I could be wrong.
Sweeney Todd would be perfect. I am hoping to catch it myself. I would LOVE to see Patti LuPone. It all depends on what style of musical you are into. I truly loved Wicked. If it interests you, definately catch it. If you want something lighthearted and upbeat, maybe Hairspray?
I would strongly recommend getting your tickets in advance. With all of the holiday travelers during the month of December, getting tickets the day of could be a nightmare.
Best of luck and welcome to the board. :)
(Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the example of how a newbie should start on the board!)
you should definitely go to see Rent...I love the show and the movie should be interesting

Like others have said, it all depends on your taste in musicals. I'm a fan of more modern stuff and comedies, so...I'd go for:
Rent
Avenue Q
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Spelling Bee
Wicked (although tix may be hard to come by that time of year)
I'm also looking forward to Sweeney Todd.
Hairspray will have you dancing in your seat! See it!
wow! so many suggestions, thank you so much. To be honest I have no idea how I have managed to miss out on musicals as a whole for so long, I recently got talked into performing in Summer Holiday and am now hoked on absolutly everything I hear, I have yet to hear anything I dont like but it is good to find out there are so many differnt types and not just the sterotype you have before you relaly start to investigate
Welcome aboard, Liz! Hope ou have a blast in New York! Glad to hear you're planning on seeing SWEENEY TODD (Good choice!).
If you like Sondheim, might I also suggest you purchasing the Original Broadway cast recordings of COMPANY and A LITTE NIGHT MUSIC for the plane ride.
SWEENEY TODD! Good choice. Even though I know nothing about it except for Michael Cerveris, but he is soooooooo... bald. And amazing. And bald. And hot.
And bald.
I'd also recommend Sweet Charity.
Also...... thank you for being like, the first newbie EVER to start a post and not be obnoxious. *applauds* You get 10 points for that. Welcome!

welcome! you should definately try to see the light in the piazza. its a beautiful love story with touching, funny, and heartbreaking moments. victoria clark is amazing, and kelli o'hara, anything she does is adorable. she handles the dramtic moments SO well and she can light up the stage with her joyous spirit. its DFINATELY worth seeing b/c its only playing until the end of march so far, and victoria and kelli might be leaving after new years. its an amazing show (and i think the only time ive ever cried yet at the same time had the biggest smile on my face.)
you should also check out:
RENT
Wicked
Mamma Mia (its a fun show, and whether or not you like ABBA, youll have a great time!)
hope this helped, and welcome once again

He's a fun dartboard. Print out small signs of all the shows you want to see and pin them to a dart board and throw as many darts as you can afford to choose the shows. (Or you can just assign various dart board numbers to various shows)
Heh, it is original.
Seriously choose what you want to see, and when you don't have a show lined up do a lottery. There is alot of threads on this board which will tell you whichs lotteries to do (meaning which shows have the least number of people doing the lottery - thus best chance of you winning!)

I think the Color Purple is going to be awesome. I'd say go for that.
My personal favorites are Rent, Avenue Q, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Light in the Piazza; and (like everyone else), I'm really looking forward to Sweeney Todd. So maybe check out those, and have fun!
