So within the last 48 hours I have seen two different people receive bullying, harassing messages through mail and email. They target each individual and bully them, say beyond hurtful things and its just not cool. Bullying in the theater world is never, ever okay. Its not cool. Its not lit. Its definitely never, ever funny.

Sending annonymous hate mail to someone who loves theater is never, ever, E V E R okay. Or cool. Or lit. Or funny. My friend got a letter today from someone who signed it with some of their favorite theater community people, well known people in the community, and its so not cool. Its disgusting that someone would think this is even remotely okay. This person has found a place where they feel accepted and you have to go and change that and hurt them and scare them by sending this to their home address. Just because people disagree on things and are jealous of people who have easier access to things you want access to, that doesnt make this okay!!!! I want to cry out of frustration and the pain that my friend is going through.

Whoever you are, youre pathetic, and a coward. You dont deserve to be in this community if you think thats okay.

ALSO if you happen to be a theater fan and you did this, think about your favorite actors. Think about who you Stan and look up to. Do you honestly think theyd ever want anything to do with you after finding out that you did this?

Whoever you are-STOP. Youre a bully and a coward. No one deserves this.

Being mean and bullying are two different things. This sounds like the former. And it sounds like something you should bring to your parents or principal. Not to a group of adults that don't know you at all.

BTW...bullying isnt cool beyond the theatrical world either.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I wasnt able to link the letter to here, but it was absolutely bullying and harassment. Im bringing it to this group because if it was somehow sent by someone on here, they need to know this is absolutely unacceptable. You cant excuse this type of behavior. You cant brush it aside. You cant act like it doesnt matter. Im not the one who was sent the letter so I dont think you really read my post fully. My friend received it, Im using social media to tell people this is NOT okay.

I did read your post. Again, how would any of US get the home address of "your friend"? Also, you're need to lecture a bunch of adults on how "not okay" bullying is, is ridiculous. I didn't brush it aside, THIS just isn't the place for your rant.

Bullying is (legally): REPEATED actions - not just ONE a one time thing; From someone is a position of power - how is an anonymous person in any way "powerful"; and curtails the individual from success (work, school, leaving their home, etc) All three things need to be in place before it is actually bullying. This is some a$$ wipe being mean.

WHY would you think anyone here would know your friend or go out of their way to snail mail them a letter? We say what we want right here.

I read them and while yeah, its super messed up, I don't understand what he is saying he is taking legal action for? someone being an a$shole? sending unsolicited email? I didn't see any threats or anything like that in the message, just someone being an a-hole.

And the OP said it was mailed to his house, but these were screenshots of an email?

Well, the second one is a student in NYC, so probably not to their house, can just go to a dorm or something?

Agreed! I don't see how its anything for law enforcement to get involved in since there were no threats or anything of that sort made?

I thought the same thing. The communication is very cruel and the person(s) who sent it have issues they need to address.

Of course, we don't know the back story of the individuals attacked, the person(s) who sent the emails/mail, or the person who started this thread. Provoked or unprovoked?

Kind of a wide net to tell one person what they did was wrong, no? And, not only do they KNOW... that's kind of WHY they are enjoying it, one would imagine. I don't think you target a trans guy and a disabled person out of the gate randomly...

If there is a huge outrage every time this happens, it will only make it happen more often...

That said, if you are trying to bring attention to any cause, subject lines are your friend.

I find it rather bizarre that someone in the theater community would take the trouble to write a letter to your "friend" when he or she is not a professional reviewer with any real power; but then again, I am not a FB person (thank God).

I think you need a refresher course on what bullying is. You don’t get to define it (no matter how highly you think of yourself).
Bullying: Seek to harm, intimidate, or coerce (someone perceived as vulnerable). That is exactly what is happening to two different people. You can’t control where people post things. What’s with the superiority complex? Get over yourself :)

The majority's point is that they're all asking what reason do you have to believe it's someone from this board doing this? Are you also posting blanketing accusatory statements to All That Chat as well as your social media profiles? Are you making sure to also find every person who follows this and other Broadway sites on social to target them, too? Have you gone to the Facebook groups of shows and told everyone there they're cowards, too?

Everyone's point is that you're a little...off-target on your accusations by posting an all-points bulletin on a chat board because someone fake-signed stage actors' names to a letter. It's highly likely, given a home address is known, it's someone in the recipients' school or neighborhood and, chances are, they've harassed the recipient(s) in the past.

I don't think OP is saying necessarily someone on BWW is doing this; rather it's a well-read venue for them to publicize what's going on.

Again...my statement is about the LEGAL sense of the word bullying. I am trained every year on anti-bullying, so this isnt my own definition, at all

Show me where I said you couldnt post here? I didnt. I want you to point your concern, anger, to a place where it might do some good for your friend.

That's an insulting, hurtful email. But, in no way, at all, is it illegal or "something the authorities can deal with". There are no criminal threats here. The First Amendment exists, and exercising your opinion on someone else is perfectly legal.

Semantics/"bullying" aside, those two letters are beyond appalling. (And frankly way worse than I expected. WTF is wrong with people??) I personally have no problem with OP posting about it in case whoever wrote them happens to visit this widely-read forum. I don't think there's anything legal to be done at this point, but nobody should ever be writing or receiving letters like that, regardless of the situation. Totally unacceptable in any fandom, Broadway or otherwise.

Seems like it is escalating. The one recipient on Facebook said "this is one of a few emails I've gotten now and all from different emails/IP addresses. Different wording and information but all with the same meaning and intent."

I don’t know what All That Chat is, so no....and yes, messages about these two incidents have made their way to other social media platforms. Someone (other than me) posted about it on their social media as well so I’m not alone.
