My school's director just enjoys doing more than fluff shows. We're doing Light in the Piazza this year and did Parade like three years ago. Sunday turned out pretty good, actually...the biggest complaint was that it was too slow but musically at least it was superb. Even though our George was VERY quiet...like sometimes barely audible.
my first musical was Sondheim! We (my middle school) did "Into the Woods" and i was the Baker's Wife. We didn't do the jr. version, but we did cut the whole Baker's Wife sleeping with the Prince thing...so most of "Moments in the Woods" was cut. I remember everyone saying how good it was and then I saw the video of it and I just wanted to crawl into a hole out of shame, hahaha. My gosh, I was so awful. I hadn't seen or heard of it before so I had no idea what I was doing. But hey, my very first musical I ever did was Sondheim! I'd love to do ITW again...and not be awful...

Into the woods is quite common. But I'm moderately surprised to see Sunday and almost shocked to see Passion being performed by high schools!
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
My HS also did Into the Woods last year. Though I guess that is one of the more tame Sondheim shows.
"Rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love."
-Neil Patrick Harris
ugh i was begging my director to do Night Music last year because it has tons of talented singing girls and we had about 15 uber talented senior girls...then somehow we got stuck doing Oliver =(. I'd love to do Passion...that is so cool. In fact, I'm gonna propose that in my acting class =)
"There are only two worthwhile things to leave behind when we depart this world of ours: children and art."
-Sunday In The Park With George
I was in a decent middle/high school version of Sweeney back in the day. Though it is awkward having a chorus of "men" who's voices haven't change. We DID have an age-appropriate Toby though who was quite good:)

I think it's absolutely disgusting if a HS did PASSION. Then again I think it's equally awful to do COMPANY, FOLLIES, NIGHT MUSIC, & SUNDAY.
