Posted: 2/8/08 at 12:16pmSounds fun to me! But am I right in assuming they're using the basic storyline of WOODS, but not the score? That's what the article implies.

Posted: 2/8/08 at 12:18pmI'm also assuming this has nothing to do with Sondheim's score. Updated On: 2/8/08 at 12:18 PM

Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra
Salve, Salve Regina
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Eva
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
O clemens O pia

" the show features music form a long list of pop/rock artists, including Gorillaz, Massive Attack, Prince, Basement Jaxx, Stevie Wonder, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Janet Jackson, James Brown, Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, Black Eyed Peas, Bob Marley and The Chemical Brothers."
- I don't think The Witche's Rap will be heard.

It doesn't sound like anything in this show will remotely resemble Into the woods, except for the magical items in the storyline. From the report, it doesn't even sound like ACT 2 is being done.
They are not using any of the music from the show, and none of the characters are the same. It just happens that the title sounds like Into the Woods to give it some credibility.
I don't think Sondheim fans need to sweat over this.
It sounds exciting, and I would be interested to see it.

Posted: 2/8/08 at 1:29pmPlease say it isn't true!!!!! I pray they dont ruin the show like that!

Posted: 2/8/08 at 1:44pmThis is a completely original work using the basic premise of INTO THE WOODS. There are no Sondheim songs. It's not an adaptation.

Posted: 2/8/08 at 1:57pmI don't even know why Sondheim's name is even mentioned. It really has nothing to do with his show. I wonder what the book is like and why James Lapine's name wasn't mentioned?

I almost had a heart attack when I read the thread title. Don't mess with "Into the Woods"! So glad this isn't really an adaptation and that the score will be spared.
I suppose I can appreciate this in theory . . . damn you "So You Think You Can Dance" for making me kind of appreciate hip-hop . . . sometimes.
I wish they hadn't felt the need to associate themselves with "Into The Woods" to get people's attention.

Posted: 2/8/08 at 3:10pmCan they use the title "Into The Woods" considering it has nothing to do with the actual show?

If you read the Playbill article properly it tells you what music the show contains! Why is everyone having a fit on here!! Its hardly a new show, first performed last summer.

The title isn't "INTO THE WOODS" - its "INTO THE HOODS." But that said, you can't copyright a title - or even an idea.
Just be happy that a Sondheim musical is "mainstream' enough for this show to make a loving "spoof" homage to it's title. This is the kind of thing that Sondheim himself would probably love - but again, if you read about it, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the musical. The only thing similar is the fairy tale premise.

Posted: 2/8/08 at 3:19pmActually it will be almost 2 years old by the time it opens in the West End. It has played the 1300 seat Sadlers Wells theatre already.
