What's really sad here is that the person who started this post has yet to respond to anyone. Who cares why certain shows got nominated and other shows did not. We should applaud the shows that did get nominated. I am sure that everyone has had their opinions about shows that were nominated in the past that should not have been. IMO, I have seen all 4 shows that have been nominated for Best Musical this year. And like everyone else the show that I enjoyed the most was Xanadu. Cry Baby was fun for what it was. In the Heights was good, not great, but good. And while I love the music of Passing Strange, i did not like the show at all.
BroadwayRandy, I agree with you on your assessments of the four nominated musicals, except for the fact that I just did not like Cry-Baby at all. Xanadu got nominated because it's the best new musical of the season! It's been a long time since I've had this much fun at the theatre.
What I love about Xanadus success is that it started directly on Broadway and has been able to last for over a year and still get nominated. Cry Baby started in La Jolla, while both Passing Strange and In the Heights had runs Off-Broadway. Xanadu is a fun show. Look at how many times BWW posters have seen Xanadu compared to any other show on Broadway. I myself have seen the show 6 times. It is a must see for me whenever I come into the city, and I live in Texas. The material is fun, fresh, and different. Nothing else on broadway compares to it. I wish Xanadu the best of luck at this years Tonys. It is the little engine that can.
I saw the show at yesterday's matinee. I congratulated all of the actors at the stage door, but Tony Roberts replied, "Thanks, but we think In the Heights is going to win." That kind of made me a little upset (not to quote that other show, ugh). Xanadu is just a well-produced, well-written, solid, tight, little show. It's unique and fresh, just in a different way than In the Heights. It certainly deserves some love if any show this season ever did.
I think the original poster was just trying to make trouble, but taking such a reductive approach to the show is like saying Avenue Q is just about puppets, or Sunday in the Park with George is just about painting a picture.
Everything can be dismissed that way.
I saw Xanadu and it worked entirely on its own terms as a joyful musical comedy, with a very very smart book.
IN THE HEIGHTS was my actually the least favorite of the shows nominated for Best Musical.
I did not find it original in any respect, the book was terrible, and I was bored for most of the show (and yes, I speak Spanish, so I got the jokes, but they weren't funny).
XANADU, in my opinion, was the best. And I like its cast recording (if that argument is still going on).
I just saw In the Heights, and I don't understand what all the hype was about. I preferred Xanadu much more. Brilliant book and underlying message pioneered by hilarious and genius book with fun songs and great ensemble cast. In the Heights... looks much more expensive, nothing mindblowing or original. And not NEARLY as fun or entertaining.
Just another thought. I saw ITH off-Broadway last year. At the time, it seemed like a so-so show, with a very shaky book, with no real character development at all. For that reason I have avoided seeing it again on Broadway -- especially after the reviews came out, which seemed to indicate that nothing much had changed, book-wise, with the show. I have no desire to see it again, but feel the performances were energetic and the dancing was respectable. As for the score, it's just not my cup of hemlock.
I would vote for Xanadu any day over ITH, as well as any other of the nominated musicals. It's fun, with great performances and a great tonic to chase the blues away. HUZZAH!!!!!
<< << Xanadu, on the other hand, was entertaining, well-performed by a dazzling cast, fast-paced and the most fun of any show this season. >>
So, Ed... you admit to NOT having seen the Broadway production of "ITH", but you feel comfortable stating that "Xanadu" is the most fun of ANY show this season? Even those that you have not seen? We all know from reading your posts how you feel about "Xanadu" (and basically why you feel the way you do) -
I love the show as well, but for different reasons than you do, I believe.
That the equivalent of declaring that a certain movie will definitely win the Oscar without seeing any of the other contenders, no?
EDIT: Have to edit to add that I dont know how anyone that actually saw "Xanadu" could think it is NOT worthy of a Tony nomination ! The show is EXCELLENT with a stellar cast, and the best book of the season (in my opinion)
I just have a problem with people declaring ANYTHING to be the best without seeing all of the other choices.
