LOL how is South Pacific not a commercial musical production?
Because it's non-profit. It's like a Roundabout show.
Dugh!
Can someone please explain to me how a show about a roller disco and greek gods got nominated for the TONY AWARDS?!!?!?!?!??!?!
I'm sorry, but if you don't know why it was nominated and that is your assessment of the show, then I don't think anyone should waste their time explaining it to you at all. Obviously, you either haven't seen the show, haven't read anything about the show (including the reviews), or both. Even people who don't like the show understand how it received most of the nominations it did.
Did you even see the show???
XANADU was nominated because it deserved to be nominated.
Such ignorance.
A show doesn't have to be riveting to be nominated. XANADU has a great book, great score, fantastic acting, and lacks in no department. Altogether it was flawless.
Compared to the other shows that could have taken its slot (A Catered Affair, The Little Mermaid, Young Frankenstein), I think that the voters made the right decision.
You are wondering how the wonderful XANADU got nominated and you are not wondering how the awful CRY-BABY got nominated ?????
It's flawless, timeless... perfection, that's how!
YES IT CAN!!!
Huzzah.

Listening to the recordings that are out so far none of them excite me that much. I thought the recording of Xanadu was BORING.
Well then it's a good thing the nominations aren't based on "best cast recording". Honestly, if you haven't seen it, you can't give a valid opinion as to why it (or any show) shouldn't be nominated.
I'm listening to the OBC right now and I really like it. I'm glad it got nominated, but I don't think it will/should win. That's a ITH/PS contest.

I disagree. If the cast recording is not good, then there is no way the show is gonna be good.
That's some of the biggest bull**** I've read on the board, Jackson.
There are examples of good shows and bad cast recordings. Others who want to waste their time on you can make a list.
it seems that you only judge shows by their cast recordings and their scores. maybe you should get off your butt and actually SEE a show.
If the cast recording is not good, then there is no way the show is gonna be good.
Even I'm not that stupid. I freely admit that I may not have liked a cast recording, but changed my opinion upon seeing the actual show once I put the score into perspective (I mentioned it several times recently regarding Lord of the Rings and Billy Elliott). I can only assume you are just trying to be a provocative a-hole (like that's really so original and clever around here) and are not really that ignorant.
"I disagree. If the cast recording is not good, then there is no way the show is gonna be good."
I seriously hope that's a joke. I can't believe someone would believe that. What you hear on a CD is only one aspect of a show, and even with that there are countless recordings that either (a) make the show sound better than it does in the theatre, or (b) make the show sound worse. I treasure my cast recordings but I'm not delusional enough to believe that listening to a cast recording is an accurate way to even begin to judge a show.

Capn - Your assessments of XANADU and PASSING STRANGE are completely spot on. Couldn't agree more with your comments.
And I'll say it again... I really don't understand those who think this was a "weak year." Eight new musicals opened on Broadway this season (though only seven were eligible for nomination) and each one has its share of supporters, both critical and personal.
it wasn't a weak year at all.
CRY-BABY and GLORY DAYS were the only true horrors in the "New Musical" category... and even C-B has some fans.
Glory days should have gotten nominated!

I think that's insulting towards an essentially perfect production (that being "Xanadu"). It's saying, "Well, given the crappy options, it's the best they could do." When, in actuality, "Xanadu" is an amazing new musical with a brilliant book and top-notch cast. It's easily the best new musical of the past season and I'm sure hoping it gets recognized as such at the Tony Awards.

There is no way a show can be good if it has a mediocre cast recording. Pure and simple.

Nope just stating the truth. The cast recording is the number one consideration when I look for a show for our community theater.

Well then original Follies must have been sheer crap judging by that recording.

You are wrong on so many levels.
I liked Little Mermaid's cast recording, but didn't care for the show. I like Chicago's cast recording, but didn't care for the show either. I didn't care for Legally Blonde's cast recording much, but thought it was a good show.
A cast recording isn't the only thing that makes a show. You forgot book, orchestrations, sets, costumes, etc.!
