If Bernadette had won the Tony.....
1.People's perception of Bernadette's performance would have been more positive, her performance going down as one of the best.
2.The LuPone revival would have never happened
3.The Mendes revival would have had higher grosses
4.We would have seen Bernadette back on Broadway sooner (Mrs Lovett in the Doyle revival, perhaps?)
5.Laurents would have died of shame when he couldn't manipulate others into thinking the Mendes revival was so bad, so
6.We would have been spared of the WSS revival
7. Maybe MENDES would have been keen to make a film adaptation of GYPSY based on the success of his revival, with BERNADETTE, and since Laurents would have died there would be nothing to stop him.
8. Or, at least, Sam Mendes would have returned to Broadway sooner, because his GYPSY production might have made more money and seemed more successful. Perhaps we missed on what potentially could have been the next CABARET in terms of revival success and innovation.
9. Since more people would want to see Bernadette in Gypsy when she won the award (look at Alice Ripley and Next to Normal), more people would presumably begin to appreciate quality musical theatre, and Sondheim....so
10. Raul would have won the Tony.
Damn you Tony voters.

- Doubt that. More people dreamt about LuPone in the role than Bernadette. Plus fans were waiting to see Patti play the role since the late 80's.

"11. She didn't win. The end."
Yes, I agree. This is just beating a dead horse.
I doubt if Bernadette won the Tony, the Gypsy revival would have run any longer. Just because a show or a star wins a Tony doesn't mean it is going to sell any better than they would have had it lost.
Can't we just move on? Same with the Raul Tony situation. These two things have been discussed to death before.

Posted: 10/24/09 at 7:41pmI'm taking it that you meant this tongue in cheek, since several of your points are fairly big leaps. But I do think that LuPone would have happened eventually no matter what, perhaps without Laurents involved, but it would have happened.

I love Bernadette. Love her to death, but she was horrid in the show. It's over and done with now, let it be.
Oh, and a Sam Mendes film version of his High School production of GYPSY is something I could certainly live without ever seeing.

Oh, I get it, you think it makes you look cooler to say crap like that. I remember when I used to think that way.

Oh, I get it. You're playing the part of the snarky bitch tonight that nobody ever liked and always made fun of so you spend the rest of your life trying to put others down with mediocre insults. I guess I didn't realize. Carry on...

What is less high school about the sets in the 08 revival?
"I'm taking it that you meant this tongue in cheek, since several of your points are fairly big leaps."
Yes, I was joking for most of them. Though I am curious to know if Bernadette would have returned to Broadway if she won.
It's just I KNOW how ridiculous 'beating this dead horse' is, so I thought I'd write the post that is hopefully semi-interesting to read.

Posted: 10/24/09 at 11:21pmI don't think the Tony would have made much of a difference, but I 100% believe she should have won. I thought it was a good production with fantastic performances. It's also a shame Tammy Blanchard didn't win or at least get more recognition.

Posted: 10/25/09 at 12:14amBernadette was on fire when I saw her in Gypsy. She deserved that Tony over that monstrosity from Dancing with the Stars and Dance Your Fat Ass Off, whatever her name is. Who is she? Trash does not complete with class. The Mendes Revival was stellar. Blanchard and Burtka were phenom as well. It's just that Hairspray was more popular so they gave the Tony to that shrill little troll doll instead of legend who went on during opening with a fever. Also, a shame that Harvey won. By the time I saw him, his voice was shredded and no one in the audience understood a damn word he was saying or singing. He should stick to writing.

I get tired of people bad-mouthing the Mendes production. Almost as tired as I get of its fans badmouthing the Lupone production.
Some said Bernadette was miscast, others say she was giving one of teh greatest performances of her carer. Ethan Mordden nails it: Both groups are right. It was a valid attempt to reinterpret the part and no harm in that. I doubt that if she had won the Tony the show would have run any longer than it did. Her contract was for a year anyway.
The Lupone edition was cut in a more traditional style (despite Laurents needless fiddling with scenes. Really, The man should have retired - or died - a dozen years ago.) Lupone was sensational and had terrific co-stars as well. You could argue that if teh Peters production had not happened, the Lupone might have run longer but not likely. Lupone had a 1-year contract and even with the Tony awards it won for her and her two co-stars the show never did sell out. Sondheim always suspected that the show was never going to be an audience favorite, and maybe he is right.
Aside from that, the rest of of the suppositions on the list, while fun to read, are kind of pointless.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Bettyboy, grow up. Are you seriously calling Marissa Jaret Winokur names because Bernadette lost? Really...?
Anyway...
Bernadette was wonderful in GYPSY, as was Marissa in HAIRSPRAY but I think everyone pretty much agrees Marissa rode on the coattails of the show's sweep that year. She was great but Bernadette and a few other nominees (and non nominees) were better, IMO.

BettyBoy... I do agree with you on ONE thing....
"He should stick to writing."
It is INcredible that the songs coming out of Harvey's mouth should be in any way be construed as actual singing.... his "singing voice" would be more appropriate in a frog pond. Even Lauren Bacall has a better voice.. and that's saying something. In my opinion, Harvey should stick to writing and acting, both which he does very, very well. Leave the singing to trained professionals.

Posted: 10/25/09 at 12:42pmin all fairness, i don't think harvey has ever tried to record a solo album or proclaim himself a singer. he knows what his voice is and uses it to maximum effect for the roles he plays. of course its not good - but its unique, and hes one hell of an actor.

I agree Harvey is a brilliant actor and writer, and while h never claims to be a vocalist, he does get singing roles and trust me, the night I saw Hairspray, he was so hoarse on top of his hoarseness that honestly no one sitting around me could understand anything he was uttering. ( Believe me, I asked around, making sure I wasn't delusional).
As far as my comments about Marissa, I apologize if they are name-calling, but I just think she is of the lowest quality and she never seemed to sound as good as she did on the Hairspray CD. Her career since Hairspray seems to demonstrate this. Bernadette deserves that Tony.

Move on, dear.
